The Battle of Stamford Hill, Bude, England
May
The battle re-enactment uses cannons and it is great fun the family to see.
The battle began on Tuesday, 16 May 1643 at dawn. A large Roundhead army of over 5,000 men under the command of the Earl of Stamford launched itself across the Tamar to invade Cornwall. Stamford barricaded himself on the hill near Stratton that now bears his name. The Cornish leaders had less than 3,000 men but emerged victorious after a gruelling 10 hour battle.
Each year, the re-enactment of the Battle of Stamford Hill excites both residents and visitors to the area. Members of the Sealed Knot Society keep the traditions of the English Civil War alive by re-enacting many of the major battles across the UK and lay wreaths to honour the fallen.
