Semana Santa, Ecija, Spain
from Palm sunday to Easter Sunday
A most impressive display of religious fervor blended with typical Andalusian "joie de vivre", the Holy Week takes place every year during the days preceding Easter. Penitents in medieval costumes (with a disturbing resemblance to the Ku Klux Klan) lead processions of superb pasos, or floats, where scenes of the Christ's passion alternate with life-size images of Virgin Mary.
The night processions are lit by torches and atmospheric music is played by local bands. Small angels, complete with wings and flower baskets, run alongside during the less somber moments. Even the most respectable member of the "brotherhoods" can be seen drinking with his family in his favorite bar shortly after the event!
