Guardian Hay Festival: world-renowned annual literature festival
It takes place in the little market town that boasts 39 bookshops, Hay-on-Wye. The annual festival runs for 10 days in May/June in a central location just outside the town.
It attracts thousands of visitors and guest speakers give audience participated interviews. Past speakers have included Stephen Fry, Sue Townsend, Michael Wood, Jeremy Paxman, Goldie Hawn, Rory Bremner, Dylan Moran, Sarah Waters, Jon Snow and Terry Pratchett.
Bill Clinton who attended the festival in 2001 famously quoted it as "The Woodstock of the mind".
