The Procession of Christ, Near Perugia, Italy
Good Friday
This is a very beautiful night time procession through the streets of the medieval town of Panicale. The image of Christ is removed from the alter cross and placed on a bier. This bier is followed by a statue of the mourning mother, which in turn is followed by 3 gigantic crosses weighing 60 to 80 kilos. The crosses are carried by men in brown robes, representing the old order of the Fraternity who used to mourn the dead. They are then followed by children in Roman costumes. Following behind are the townspeople holding their candles and singing.
The procession moves very slowly as the heavy crosses can only be carried by the same man for a few minutes before another takes over. This is the perfect time to include a visit one of a selection of Panicale's wonderful ristoranti for traditional Easter food.
