Description
The large house, known locally as La Casona, occupies prime position in the mountain hamlet of Basieda in the Picos de Europa. Basieda is in the Libana Valley 15km from Potes. Potes is a market town and is the main jumping-off point for the Picos de Europa in Cantabria.
The Olmares house was both a farmhouse and villa built by the famous de Monasterio family over 200 years ago. It's a beautiful example of the local traditional style - built with thick walls of local stone, huge hand-hewn beams and wide stairways of oak from the ancient forests of the Picos de Europa.
This large spacious rental sleeps 6-8 people very comfortably - we prefer small groups - although it can sleep up to 14 people. An ideal holiday home for rent all year round. A big plus is that we can now offer catered dinners. Details of menu etc. on request.
The house has a perfect situation at the front of the village with this spectacular view across the valley below and to the hills rising steeply to the high mountains beyond. The self-contained and enclosed garden, which has a barbecue, is completely secluded and therefore a good sunbathing spot.
The area around is very beautiful with first rate bird-watching, wild flowers and lovely places for walking.
The holiday coast of North Spain with it's white sandy beaches is an hour away through the dramatic Hermida Gorge.
Prices include water, logs, elecricity, central heating, bed linen (real sheets, not nylon), towels & tea towels. There is a washing machine, iron & board and drying area. The kitchen is fully equipped with hob, oven, microwave, dish-washer and food processor. Water is supplied direct from mountain streams and this is drinkable, we like it, but you may prefer to drink bottled water. Prices for catered dinners on request.
Please Note:
Because of the nature of the house - stairways, balconies, french doors and ancient bits everywhere - some parents might find it unsuitable for young children although our own children grew up here without incident. We ask that all children treat the house with respect.
