Description
The Olmares apartments, with their superb situation on the side of a mountain looking across the valley to the distant peaks, are perfect for doing nothing at all should you so choose. The terraces and balconies offer glorious views and weather – sunshine most days but enough cloud or rain just to cool the place down to the perfect temperature – mid 20’s – low 30’s in summer, 18ş - 25ş in autumn and spring and this sometimes even on Christmas Day. We've only had the snow plough through the village 4 times in 16 years! Usually the snow lies, like icing on a cake, higher up on the mountains all around.
Doing nothing is a definite option. We call it “Basieda Disease”. That said, Olmares is a first-rate base for taking part in any of the activities mentioned above but Olmares’s true “raison d’ętre” is walking, bird-watching, wild life and wild flowers.
2 Bedroom apartment
This spacious apartment (75 sqm) has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. It's entire frontage, with floor-to-ceiling living area windows and the windows of both bedrooms, has the same fantastic views across the valley below to the high peaks beyond. It is built into the side of a mountain and is all at ground level giving onto a private terrace. The apartment is ideally suited to those who appreciate space, privacy and quality - comfortable beds, duvets, cotton sheets, power assisted showers etc. Perfect for relaxing or enjoying the marvelous local walks. Although the apartment is centrally heated throughout, there is also a splendid wood-burning stove in the living room.
The apartment, built into the side of a mountain is all on one level. You go down some ancient stone steps to the entrance hall off which are the living quarters – 2 twin bed bedrooms, one with ensuite bathroom, the other with adjoining bathroom and the spacious open plan kitchen/dining/living area.
The greatest care has been taken to ‘isolate’ each apartment, in terms of noise, from its neighbours and the best possible furnishing and accessories have been used – even the wide picture windows and french doors are double glazed – thus keeping out summer heat and in winter warmth. The terrace or balcony, depending on which apartment you have, runs the full width of the apartment and is therefore very substantial – wide enough for easy sunbathing, eating outdoors and birdwatching.
There is a separate laundry room and drying area. There is also a separate communal sitting room used by all our guests. This beautiful room with picture windows has a mezzanine floor with giant tv. and dvd player with a small library of paperbacks and books for improving your Spanish. On the main floor there is a library of reference books on birds, wildflowers, mushrooms, moths and butterflies etc. together with guide books on walking, biking and maps covering the area. Not suitable for young children. Those over 12 by prior agreement only. Normally free Wifi is available in the courtyard and on request we provide Wifi in the communal sitting room 6-7pm. Higher speed wifi/internet access are available free at the local Ayuntamiento (Council building 3Km).

Location description
Basieda is a remote hamlet built into the mountainside 15km from Potes in the Picos de Europa. The Picos de Europa are the most impressive part of the Cordillera de Cantabrica mountain range of the North of Spain. Basieda can be reached by ferry to Santander or Bilbao, by flights to Bilbao, Santander or Madrid or by road through France. The Picos de Europa mountains are a paradise for walking and climbing with magnificent flora and fauna.
Because it’s so unspoilt here flora and fauna survive and prosper as they have done throughout the ages. In the 16 years since we came to live here there have been almost no changes to the old farming methods. You can set your telescope up on your balcony or terrace and watch birdlife from giant raptors to tiny serins go by. We can tell you where to go for golden orioles or wall creepers. For moths and butterflies you need go no further than Basieda – we have buddleia everywhere in the gardens. The short walk to the local stream produces so many different sightings – it’s like strolling through a special butterfly garden. Wild flowers in the Picos de Europa are just glorious – walking the routes from your apartment front door at any time of the year will delight you in the variety of flowers you will see – just about every one in the book of Alpine flowers from cover to cover. For mushroom lovers the woods and meadows around produce an amazing variety and abundance of them in spring and late summer but particularly in autumn when the forests are anyway at their most glorious. The colours of the leaves in the soft golden autumn sunshine is a genuinely uplifting experience.

Deposit/Booking Notes
Prices are for the apartment and not per person. Also your stay with us can normally start on any day of the week to allow you to take advantage of cheaper mid-week airfares. There is a refundable deposit of €120 against breakages or extra cleaning. We ask for a 25% deposit to confirm the booking and the balance is payable on arrival. In the event of cancellation less than 8 weeks before your stay the 25% deposit is non-refundable. Prices include water, wood, electricity, central heating, bed-linen (real sheets, not nylon), towels & tea towels and starter breakfast pack. Water is supplied direct from the mountain streams and this is drinkable, we like it, but you may prefer to drink bottled water.
We can give you a travel account number which will give you a discount of 20% when booking a Brittany Ferries crossing to Santander or Bilbao.
