Location description
The Area
Westward Ho! practically owes it’s existence to Charles Kingsley’s famous book after which it was named. Rudyard Kipling was schooled in Westward Ho! and between these two literary greats, Westward Ho! was first established during Victorian times as a holiday destination of choice for the well heeled and Royal sets.
Things have moved on since then, Westward Ho! is now a thriving seaside resort boasting a magnificent 2 miles of golden sandy beach with blue flag status, which stretches all the way to theTaw/Torridge estuary. The beach is backed by Northam Burrows which makes Westward Ho! perfect for outdoor activities and watersports. The village of Westward Ho! is also home to an array of eateries and local shops.
The historic port and shopping centre of Bideford is only 2 miles away. Today Bideford is known as the little white town which has changed little over the years. It is a large market town and port with an active fishing industry. In the 16th Century, Bideford was Britain's 3rd largest port and it is rumoured that Sir Walter Raleigh landed his first shipment of tobacco there. It is home to the Kathleen and May - the only three-masted schooner in existence - and a pannier market which dates back to 1884.
It also boasts a statue to the writer Charles Kingsley which is a permanent reminder of Bideford's most famous resident.
The charming coastal villages of Clovelly, Appledore and Instow are within easy reach, a perfect day out to sample local seafood and perhaps purchase local handcrafted artefacts. Local family attractions include the Big Sheep, Milky Way, RHS Rosemoor gardens and more. With so much to see and do, and all within close proximity to Westward Living, one week will not be enough – so book 2!
What To Do
There are many exciting activities to get stuck into whilst visiting Westward Ho!
Walking & Rambling
Westward Living self catering cottages at Duckhaven Stud are ideally situated for walks along the coastal footpath. The breathtaking walk from Westward Ho! to Hartland Point is one of the most unspoilt. Half way along the edge of the peninsular you will come across the famous fishing village of Clovelly. Turn the treacherous maritime corner of Hartland Point and you enter an even wilder walking zone. The jagged shores from here to Bude weren't known as the Wrecker's Coast for nothing - the coast has more wrecks per mile than any other in Europe.
We are not too far from both Exmoor and Dartmoor, both spectacular walking destinations
