Location description
If you are not familiar with Swaledale, it is the most northerly of the Yorkshire Dales, very close to the border with County Durham. It is a smaller, more enclosed dale than some of the others, and this gives it a more intimate feeling. The top end of the dale is truly wild, with high fells, and the road up the dale leads over and down into Cumbria. This is wonderful walking and driving country, and the home of the Tan Hill Inn, the highest pub in England.Coming back down the dale, the villages of Keld, Muker and Thwaite are typical dales villages, with Muker the home of the famous Swaledale Woollens shop. Spectacular passes lead over into Wensleydale and a drive across the Buttertubs Pass is a never-to-be-forgotten experience.
Between Muker and Gunnerside, an old Viking settlement, is Ivelet, a tiny hamlet with a mediaeval bridge, which must not be missed. This is one of our favourite family picnic spots, with opportunities for paddling and making dams in the river. If you cross over the river between Low Row and Healaugh, and walk or drive along Harkerside, the views over the Swaledale are breathtaking. You can also walk this route, in the opposite direction, direct from the cottage. Somewhere along here, you will find the roadside clearing that we call “our back garden”, and which is another favourite picnic spot. Or drive over into Arkengarthdale from Low Row and pass the ford used in the James Herriot TV series. Then on into Langthwaite, also used in the TV series, which has a tiny, but perfect, village pub and shop, all accessed over a narrow, hump–backed bridge. Reeth, the capital of the Dale, is only a small village, but it has a huge village green.
All this is within a few miles of the cottage, even within walking distance if that is what you wish. If you can tempt yourself away from Swaledale, there is plenty to do in the surrounding area. Or, of course, you could just stay in the cottage and relax, with the occasional foray out to the Bridge Inn opposite!
