    Description

    Guests have always been amazed at the size, cleanliness and comfort of this gorgeous converted barn. Having taken these sorts of holidays ourselves for years we have tried to think of everything that guests might want. It is in a truly beautiful setting, encapsulating everything that one might expect from SW France: large skies, sunflowers, views across gently undulating farmland to a village on a hill.

    The gite sleeps a max of 4 persons in twin and double rooms. It is part of a larger property nestled in a rustic setting about 1 mile from the village of St-Puy. Our hamlet is called Cauboue and there are four other houses, the closest of which is over 50m away.

    The gite is accessed by a new private path built around the property. The entrance is via double patio doors where there is a newly constructed tiled patio with table and chairs. Deeper into the garden is our favourite place: "the stone patio". In the heat of the day this is where you will sit in the shade, read in the hamoc or take your meals. Breakfast here is unbeatable: you have cycled, (driven?) the one mile up to the boulangerie to fetch croissants and you retire to this patio armed with fresh coffee to gaze at the breathtaking views. This is true relaxation.

    The entrance is through double patio doors which open into the newly fitted kitchen and dining area. The lounge, next door, is a vast place as it is the height of two floors. There is another set of double patio doors opening onto the garden from here. There are many bookshelves as well as a television, which does not a receiver but there is a DVD player and large film collection. Of course, you can bring your own too. The attractive oak staircase leads up from here and opens out into a spacious and light landing with views towards St-Puy.

    The two bedrooms (twin and double) are on the first floor and face west towards the pool and field beyond. The double room is spacious with king size bed, two bedside tables, chest of drawers and a large wardrobe. The twin room has bedside table and chest of drawers as well as two single beds. There is also a loo with wash basin on the first floor.

    The spacious bathroom downstairs has been superbly fitted with bath, high pressure shower with door and large, subtly-lit vanity unit with very large mirror as well as toilet. It is tiled throughout and has a white tiled floor.

    The real pull that keeps guests returning is the 14x7m pool. This is lightly saline which is so much kinder to the skin and eyes than an abrasive chlorine additive. With this new system your skin does not smell of chlorine after swimming but rather is softened by the salt. The pool is alarmed but we insist that poor or non-swimmers are kept away from the pool area at all times.

    Though not every holiday needs to be taken in summer. This barn was converted in 2008 so is insulated to the latest required building standards. It is centrally heated, has new double glazed UPVC windows thoughout and has a powerful wood burning stove that can heat the property on its own irrespective of the central heating. The perfect place for a winter retreat too.

    Our local representatives live near St-Puy and are always on hand if you need anything during your stay.

    Location description

    Like most of our guests you will probably want to spend most of your time in this beautiful rural location relaxing and reading in the hamoc under the oak tree, or swimming. But should you want to venture out for anything more than a market or a meal there are various activities that may take your fancy: we are situated a few kilometres off the Chemin de Compostelle - so local walking is outstandingly good and superbly marked. There is a tennis court at St-Puy, 1 mile away. This village is also home to the Monluc Chateau where local wines can be tasted and bought. Its sweet wine (or vin moelleux) has recently received rave reviews in Paris. Golf is 20 mins drive away. The gite is situated 11 km from the small historic Cathedral town of Condom with excellent facilities, bars, restaurants & supermarkets etc. Wednesday is market day. There are countless little villages nearby with potential for coffee stops & markets that you will want to explore. For the more hardy, Auch and Agen are 30 km away; Lectoure and Fleurance 20.

    Other activities

    We keep a file in the gite with a full range of local activities. If the owners are staying in the house next door we can advise but we fully understand that people do not come to the Gers to spend hours visiting different places. Nevertheless, in close proximity you can canoe, play golf, visit a spa, go horse riding and watch horse racing; go on a river cruise or visit an activity lake if you fancy a change from the pool.

    Local events

    Markets abound locally:
    Fleurance (20 km) on Tuesdays, Lectoure Friday and Condom Wednesday
    Condom (11 km) on Wednesdays
    Auch (30 km) and Eauze (25 km) on Thursdays
    Lectoure (20 km) on Fridays
    Castera Verduzan (10 km) on Sundays

    As well as these there are several summer night markets in Vic-Fezensac (15km); Lavardens (10 km) and Montreal (20 km).

    On a festive note Vic-Fezensac (15km) has a Latin Music Festival on two weekends in summer.
    Marciac (40km) hosts an International Jazz Festival in August.
    Condom (11km) holds its Bandas y Penas local and National Music Festival in mid-May.
    In Mirande (40 km) there is a Country Music Festival in July.
    Agen (30km) has a Festival of Plums in Mid-August.

    We love going to the local vide grenier, lit. "empty the attic", or car boot sale. Advertised locally, these wonderful events will provide you with much tat but endless fun as you rummage and barter.

    Tourist attractions

    Chateau Monluc in St Puy village (2 km) for wine tasing.
    Terre Blanche is just 1 km from St-Puy. This foie gras farm offers sumptuous breakfasts and lunches as well as a reasonably priced gift shop.
    Castera Verduzan (10 km) has a spa and casino.
    Valence-sur-Baise (5 km) is on the pilgrims' route de Saint Jacques de Campostelle and is home to a 15 century Cistercian Abbey.
    Gondrin (15 km) and Condom (11 km) both have outdoor "fun pools".
    Auch (20 km), capital of the Gers, not only has a wonderful Cathedral but is also something of a shrine to D'Artagnan, one of the Musketeers.

    Directions

    Most guests arrive by car; we are 7-8 hours drive from either St Malo or Caen. Flying is possible with BA to Toulouse and Bordeaux. Easy Jet flies to Toulouse from Gatwick, Bristol and countless other British airports; Ryan Air serves Bergerac.
