Description of holiday farmhouse near Penne, Abruzzo
The Agriturismo, La Vecchia Fontana, is an old stone-built farmhouse, situated on the borders of the National Park of Gran Sasso, with spectacular views of the valleys of Fino river. About 15km distant is the Lago di Penne, a WWF reserve and at Arsita (7km) there is the Museo del Lupo, a museum dedicated to the wolf, one of the inhabitants of the National Park. Nearby you will find a reserve for the Abruzzese Chamois and the waterfalls of the Vitello D’Oro. You can also visit the Museum of M.U.T.A.C, at Picciano with exhibits of peasant art and traditions (about 20km).
For the more adventurous, you can trek to the Cima del Rocca, and admire the spectacular views of the Gran Sasso, Monte Camicia and the distant Adriatic and much of the provinces of Teramo and Pescara. A stay at the Agriturismo is ideal for those seeking peace, tranquillity and relaxation in a welcoming, family atmosphere.
The Agriturismo, Vecchia Fontana, is situated high in the hills, surrounded by woodland and farmland. The farm is run as a family business on about 10 hectares of land. Most of the grains that we grow are used for raising and feeding our livestock. We have many types of animal, including peacocks, goats, turtle doves, pigeons, hens, geese, sheep, ponies and donkeys, rabbits, pigs and various species of duck (mandarin, mutes and German). In addition, we grow our own fruit and vegetables and produce our own Pecorino cheese, all of which ensures that our produce is fresh and healthy.
Accommodation
The farm has 16 beds, divided into five rooms, spacious, well furnished and equipped with private bathroom and TV. We also have a double bedroom on the ground floor ideal for those who have difficulty walking and / or can not do the stairs. The refreshment center can accommodate up to a maximum of 45 people. Indeed, we have the new dining terrace which is located at the rear of the house and where you can have lunch together with a splendid panoramic view. Next is a garden with a playground where children can play safely. The room is also wheelchair accessible.
At our restaurant we serve typical, traditional dishes of the region, including Ravioli di Ricotta, Gnocchi al sugo di Papera (goose sauce), Strozzapreti alla Zingara (Pasta with a sauce of ham, mushrooms and truffles), Chitarra al Ragu, Fettuccine alla bosciola (Woodsman’s sauce prepared with mushrooms), Arrosticini di Pecora (an Abruzzese speciality of lamb skewers), coniglio alla cacciatore (Rabbit stew), Agnello alla brace (grilled lamb , and salsiccie di Maiale (Pork sausages).
