Columbine Cottage in Alton Derbyshire
(1/12)
Description of holiday cottage in Chesterfield, Peak District / East Midlands
This delightful 4 star graded, pet friendly, stone cottage sleeps up to six people in three bedrooms. It is on a quiet, private lane in the small farming hamlet of Alton on the edge of the Peak District National Park.
Columbine Cottage combines the comforts of modern living with the charm and character of a country cottage. It has been furnished and equipped to a high standard whilst retaining many original features. There is an open log fire for cosy winter evenings. The cottage also has its own private garden with barbecue and furniture for those lazy summer days. One well-behaved pet is welcome by prior arrangement at no extra cost.
The sunny sitting room has a French door opening on-to the garden. There is a spacious kitchen and separate dining room. The main bedroom has a double bed and the other two bedrooms are twin-bedded. The large bathroom has a bath, separate walk-in shower cubicle, WC and two hand-basins.
The friendly village of Alton is in beautiful countryside on the fringes of the scenic Peak District National Park. It is the ideal base for exploring all this area has to offer with excellent walking from the doorstep and horse-riding in the village. The “Crooked Spire” town of Chesterfield and the resort of Matlock Bath are both within a few miles. Chatsworth House and the “White Peak” dales around Bakewell and Dovedale are all an easy drive away.
Columbine Cottage is open throughout the year. Weekly bookings generally run from Saturday to Saturday between June and the end of September. Short breaks of three nights usually run from Friday to Monday but contact us to check if other days are available. If you book a four-night short break from Monday to Friday you get four nights for the same price as a three-night weekend break. It is always worth contacting us if your requirements are different from this, particularly for late bookings or during the winter. We try to be as flexible as possible about start dates.
There are no hidden extras in the price. What you see is what you pay. The rental covers all bedding (duvets), towels, central heating costs, electricity and an initial supply of fuel for the open fire. We ask for a 25% deposit on booking with the balance six weeks before your holiday starts. For booking arrangements and Terms and Conditions please visit our website.

Location description
Alton is a small and friendly village of around thirty stone cottages. A short walk of less than half a mile from Columbine Cottage is the Fabrick Rock. This is 299 metres above sea level and, on clear days, offers spectacular views of Derbyshire and across five other counties: Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire and Staffordshire. Look for the stone steps carved into the hillside next to it and follow the public footpath to Ashover. We provide bespoke walks from the doorstep to help you explore this lovely area.
Alton is too small for a pub or a shop but several can be found in Ashover which is a mile away by road but closer if you go on foot cross-country following one of several footpaths from Columbine Cottage down the hill. Ashover is frequently described as one of the prettiest villages in Derbyshire and it hosts a famous traditional country show on the 2nd Wednesday in August every year – definitely not to be missed!
