Description
Cervantes
Named after the famous Spanish playwright our lovely light and airy loft space is at the heart of this ancient town famous for its hot springs, its tapas and its spectacular gorge .
Being at the top of our restored town house means there are two flights of stairs to climb but the reward is that you get fantastic views as the terrace looks out over the magnificent scenery of the Andalusian countryside: rolling hills, olives groves and down in the valley the river Merchan sparkling its way to the hot springs that gave the town its name.
As you climb those stairs, this view will be the first thing you notice. Step out onto the little terrace, furnished with table and chairs, and you will find it hard to tear yourself away. Don't worry you can come out later with a glass of something cold and a long book!
From the little terrace is a a tiny kitchen with a fridge, microwave and a two burner halogen hob. Don't expect to cook three course meals in here, but you can make a meal or snack as there's all you need for cooking, but there are plenty of places to eat in Alhama and the tapas are free with every drink: you are on holiday!
The spacious open plan space is furnished in clean contemporary Moroccan style with wooden floors. For sleeping there's a king sized bed at one end right next to a lovely bathroom
The bathroom has double sinks, a walk in shower and a bath made for two. No tap end, but you might fight over who gets the dreamy view!
The living room is at the other end of the light and airy space and there's a table and chairs and a comfy sofa positioned to to look out over the trees and hills. We have a TV and a DVD player with a selection of DVDs and CDs to keep you amused if you decide on a romantic night in. There is always a selection of books and magazines giving a good excuse to sit on the terrace and listen to the birds in the apple tree below. In winter you can snuggle up beside the fire with a good book from our extensive selection. Fibre optic broadband means you can be online whenever you want.
Cervantes is ideal for couples looking for a break. Total rest and relaxation when you want it, but close to lively tapas bars, a cultured town full of history and the most wonderful landscape for walking, painting and photography.

Location description
A walk in the magnificent gorge starts only 5 minutes from our door. Here you can see the old flour mills, some are in ruins, but one is recently restored. There's an abundance of wildlife as well as swathes of beautiful flowers. At the end of the walk are a lake and two lovely restaurants, one with a beautiful Arabic baths carved into the caves and the other with an outdoor pool set in grassy gardens.
Closer to home, the town hall offers a fascinating historic tour of our ancient town. It stops at our street next to one of the oldest hospitals in Spain.
Taking the car you can visit the impossibly turquoise Lake Bermenjales where in summer you can hire canoes and pedalos. Swimming in fresh water with the mountains in the background is exhilarating.
Alhama is famous for (and named after) its hot springs so a visit to the Balneario is a must. You can visit the Roman baths, book a treatment or just bathe in the natural hot springs that flow into the river.
Granada is an hour away and a visit to the Alhambra Palace is highlight of any visit.
If you are energetic, there are more challenging walks, cycles to be hired and mountains to be climbed. Or you could while away an afternoon in a bodega or spend it sampling the many tapas and fine local wines.
Other activities
Tapas tastIing, swimming in the lake, birdwatching
Local events
The Carnival in February is a highlight of the year. In summer there are two fairs or Ferias- One for the feast of San Juan around the 24th June and the other in September, about the 8th. The Romeria or wine pilgrimage in late August is a chance to see the locals in their fiesta flamenco finery and to admire the stunning Spanish horses as they are put through their paces.

Directions
Alhama is half way between Malaga and Granada.
Flights today come into Malaga with Ryan Air, Easy Jet and Jet2 and you can then hire a car, get the bus or get a pick up.
Driving from Malaga Airport to Alhama de Granada takes about an hour and a half. We will email you with directions when you have booked.
Car Hire
We use Malaga Car http://www.malagacar.com/
https://www.facebook.com/malaga.hire?fref=ts
We use them as they seem to have a fairer fuel policy and no two hour wait for your car!
It's perfectly possible to get to Alhama on the bus, though it has to be said you need to be used to catching buses, not mind the wait and be prepared to organise your flights round the bus times.
There are buses from Malaga bus station to Granada every hour until about 7.30 pm. The journey to Granada takes 1 and a half- to two hours. It's a short ride from the airport to the bus station.Malaga to Granada is 10 Euros.
However, there are only 3 buses a day from Granada to Alhama: 12midday, 3pm and 6.30 (please check for changes to this!). At weekend there are fewer. It takes an hour and a half from Granada to Alhama because it stops a lot. Granada to Alhama is 5 Euros.
The best thing to do is check out Alsa's (rather temperamental)
website. You can book tickets on here and it's in English.
Sometimes we fly (and once took the train from Paris) to Madrid and get the bus for 16 from Madrid to Granada. It's a cheap way of having a 2 centre holiday as flights to Madrid can be very cheap- especially in summer.
You can get you picked up too with Alhambra Rambler which is a good option. The cost is 90 each way (correct May2014) from Malaga airport - email http://www.alhambrarambler.com/
