Description
Located on a hill top in Puglia southern Italy close to the medieval town of Ostuni, Bella Vista is a 5 bedroom, 5 bathroom contemporary property with swimming and plunge pools. Set amongst a hectare of olive, fruit and nut trees with drystone walled terraces and unrivalled recreation areas. There are exceptional panoramic views away to the coast, taking in a valley that is a sea of olive trees with little white trulli cones piercing the surface.
The property is divided into 2 buildings: the house (a voluminous 2 bedroom barn conversion) and an adjacent 3 bedroom villa. Each building is fully independent with its own kitchen, lounge and dining room but with spaces large enough for everyone to congregate to eat and socialise making the property ideal for larger groups of friends/families to be together but have some flexibility.
Bella Vista has free wifi internet, satellite TV and libraries for music, film and literature. All the main communal areas have sound systems with connections for iplayers.
Out on the land is a torre ostunesi style trullo with a wood-fired pizza oven (forno) and a fire-pit. There are numerous areas to relax in and out of the sun with loungers, hammocks, futons and sunbeds.
The House
The house has 2 double en-suite bedrooms and a voluminous open plan lounge/dining kitchen area with a grand fireplace. It is comfortably furnished with cream, leather sofas, black leather and chrome dining chairs and high gloss kitchen units with oak work tops. There is TV, DVD, satellite box, hi-fi, with ipod connections and multi CD player. At the back of the house is a large stone terrace overlooking the pool with a long dining table, bar and BBQ. In front is a porch with banana leaf furniture and a round mosaic dining table. Both of the bedrooms have direct access via French doors onto terraces and one of the double bedrooms can be converted to a twin if required.
The Villa
The Villa is separated from the house by a 1 metre passage way and has 3 en-suite double bedrooms. The Villa has its own fully equipped kitchen and lounge diner with bifold doors opening onto 2 large terraces with dining table, easy chairs and BBQ. Two of the bedrooms have their own direct access to terraces via French windows and one of the double bedrooms can be converted to a twin if required.
Land & Views
Situated on top of a hill Bella Vista enjoys spectacular views all the way to the sea taking in 3 medieval hill top towns and masserias. The land has over 100 olive trees, some over 200 years old, plus almonds, cherries, figs, pomegranates, various fruit trees and prickly pears. The house and villa are positioned in the middle of the land which is about 1 hectare or 2.4 acres. The front half of the land nearest the road is formally laid out to olive, fruit and nut trees. Behind the the house and villa is the garden area whilst up the hill has been left semi wild and has an abundance of wild flowers in spring. From just about any point on the land there are excellent views, either away into the distance and the sea ,or up the hill to the terraces. It is possible to see the ancient hilltop towns of Ostuni, Ceglie Messapica and Carovigno and also San Michele, San Vito and Brindisi. Some nights you can watch up to 3 firework displays from the roof terrace.
On the middle terrace there is an entrance to a grotto that goes under the hill to a masseria on the opposite side. However, this as been sealed on the orders of the town council as it was once, according to local legend, used by villans to hold hostages until owed money was paid. The land is hedged and walled on all 4 sides giving privacy and security.
Pools & Recreation
Besides the main pool which is 10m x 6m and an even depth of 1.2m there is a small 2-seater plunge pool hidden away on one of the upper terraces. For the active there is a badminton/volleyball court, boules court, croquet ‘lawn’, mini-golf course, dart board, football net and numerous card and board games. Bella Vista also has a good selection of CDs, DVDs, and books. For relaxing there are shady hammocks on the hilltop with amazing views, rope chairs suspended from olive trees, and under a giant olive tree steamer chairs and a card table. For those with culinary interests there is wood-fired pizza oven on its own terrace and BBQs on the House and Villa terraces.

Location description
Very Local
Giovanna at the farm across the road sells eggs, ricotta and hard cheeses by the truckle (large and small).
Masseria Fragnite about 2km away has a wider selection of cheeses including mozzarella all made on the premises: They also have homemade salami and ham. You can buy fresh milk here if you ask for it in the cheese shop (take a bottle to put it in)
Macelleria Aziendale. Is about a km down the road towards Antimo’s. This is a farm butcher and you can get just about anything here from a whole goat to a beef burger.. All excellent quality and reasonably priced. Most evenings, the farmer, Guiseppe runs a fornello pronto where you can choose your meat and he bbqs it superbly for you and you can eat it in an outside dining area or take it away. Beer and wine are available but expect only to be served bread and salad with your meat.
Antimo’s Restaurant right out of the villa gates and 2km on the left, one of the best restaurant in the area, intimate indoor dinning or outside on the terrace. Antimo is a top chef from Milan who grows most of the food he cooks. Good wine cellar. Worth booking the day before and letting him know any preferences you have, he is very obliging.
Ostuni & Ceglie
These are 2 medieval hill top towns close to the property. Ostuni is the more ‘touristy’ of the two whereas Ceglie is a bit more ‘real’. Ceglie which is the closer has by far the best restaurants but Ostuni wins on cool bars and clubs. Both are fascinating to walk round the narrow cobbled streets and loose your way.

Badminton, boules/bocce, mini golf, croquet, darts

PLACES TO GO (a small selection)
ON THE COAST
North Coast
Beaches: Torre Guaceto ( a nature reserve, no cafes or kiosks so you will need to take everything with you, Pantanagianni, Egnazia (just the Savelletri side of Egnazia). The beach with the young buzz, loud bars, pizzeria and fish restaurant is Lido di Bosca Verde near Pilone.
Octopus BBQ (and other seafood’s)-La Rotunda: Between Torre Canne and Savelletri
Towns: Villanova: a little fishing port. Polignano Al Mare (perched on cliffs). Trani and Monopoli have interesting small harbours, Otranto has an unusual church with skulls and a tree of life in the floor.
The big towns of Bari and Brindisi have extensive port areas and old centres. They are both ferry ports.
South Coast
Beaches: take your pick anywhere between San Pietro in Bevagna and Campomarina (between Porto Caesareo and Taranto)
Taranto has an large port are and old centre and extensive mussel beds.
INLAND
Ostuni, and Ceglie with their medieval Centro Storicos are confusion of winding streets and alleys. Ostuni also has impressive views away to the sea and is the more cosmopolitan of the 2 towns. But Ceglie has a more ‘real’ Italian feel.
Carovigno has an old centre with a small castle that has a very picturesque courtyard. There are tours round the castle (last one at 6pm).
Lecce, named Florence of the south by the Lecce tourist board which may be stretching it a bit but does have lots of interesting and unusual buildings: can be reached by train from Ceglie which makes for a nice day out. In the other direction the train goes to Martina Franca.
Oria, good castle, museum, gardens and surrounding old town, Vecchia Oria is a good seafood restaurant
Matera (Sassi), a semi deserted town of cave dwellings. The location for Mel Gibson’s film The Passion Of Christ
Alberobello, a completely unique town made almost entirely of trulli. A must even though it is very touristy.
Grotte di Castellano, spectacular limestone caves, Italy’s longest cave system.
Directions
GPS Position N40.6580 E17.5605
From Brindisi Airport:
Follow signs for Bari on leaving airport. This will eventually bring you onto the SS379 dual carriageway. Leave this at the Ostuni/Villanova junction (there will be earlier turnoffs for Ostuni...don’t be tempted to take them). From that junction follow signs for Ostuni. Keep following Ostuni signs but not the ones marked Centro and after about 10 mins and 4 roundabouts you come to a t-junction on the outskirts of Ostuni, opposite the t-junction is a garage (AGIP). Turn left here, follow road up the hill (100m) and bare right following Altre Direzione sign. Avoid Centro signs. Keep following Altre Direzione signs until you pick up signs for Ceglie Messapica. Follow these until you are on a long straight road that leaves Ostuni. After about 6km look out for a sign on your left for Casina Vitale soon on your right there is a sign ‘Birinbau’about a further half km on the right is a red triangle sign showing 2 roads to the right and one to the left. Drive slowly now. The road to the left is the one you want. 300m after this sign there is a sign on the right for Masseria Fragnite/ Antimo’s /Macelleria Aziendale. Immediately turn left at this sign. Then take the first right (about 300m): follow signs Antimo’s /Macelleria Aziendale (at night only the yellow sign for Antimo’s shows up) After about 1km you come to a T-junction, turn left here. Stay on this road (do not take the left turn). After 1km the road makes a sharp right and goes up a hill, you will see a long white wall on your left with a black wrought iron gate. Enter here and you are at Bellavista.
From Bari Airport:
On leaving airport follow signs for Bari. keep following Bari signs until you see Brindisi signs. Follow Brindisi signs and this will eventually bring you onto SS16. stay on SS16 (which become SS379 at Fasano) until you see Ostuni/Villanova signs (about 1hr from Bari) leave SS379 here, don’t be tempted by earlier Ostuni signs. Now follow directions as in Brindisi Airport above.
