Description
Villa Toto is set in a tiny hameau, there are only five other houses and the road doesn't lead anywhere, so it's rare to see a passing car - and they always wave! It has five double bedrooms, three bathrooms, a large L-shaped lounge and a fully equipped kitchen. There is room for ten to dine in comfort both inside and out, and the terraced gardens lead down to the large fenced pool. There are plenty of loungers and chairs, and the west garden is shady in the afternoons if you need to stay cool.
Although rural in location, Villa Toto is just a ten minute drive to everyday shopping (and the bar!) and is half an hour from Carcassonne. A twenty minute drive takes you to either Limoux or Mirepoix and the property is located in the fascinating Razčs area of the Aude. The views from the garden are spectacular - to the south the Pyrenees, and to the north lie the Black mountains. The Mediterranean beaches are under an hour's drive to the east and the Pyrenees about the same to the south.

Location description
Coast/Beach
It's about an hour's drive to the blue flag Mediterranean beaches of Narbonne Plage, Gruissan-chalets plage and St. Pierre de Mer. Our favourite, Tamarissiere, is a little further on, not far from the picturesque old port of Marseillan - home to Noilly Prat. Closer to home, just outside Carcassonne to the east lies Lac du Cavayere. Beautifully landscaped with crystal clear water and pretty pebbled beaches, this lake provides safe freshwater swimming, canoeing and other water sports.
Golf
Nearest golf at Carcassonne, 27 Kilometres. The superb 18-hole golf course in Carcassonne, 30 minutes drive away, is reputed to be one of the most beautiful golf courses in France. The course boasts brilliant panoramic views, well kept fairways, fast greens and a warm welcome for visitors. It is located close to the medieval city, between Cavagnac and Carcassonne.
Skiing
Nearest skiing during the season, December to April, is Formigueres which is 56 Kilometres away. Particularly good for snowboarding, beginners and intermediate skiers.
Other activities
White water rafting and kayaking in the Haute vallee.
Local events
Every year there is a wine festival near Limoux - Toque et Cloche - which happens the weekend before Easter. The festival at Carcassonne features world class acts from Elton John to the London Philharmonic Orchestra
Tourist attractions
The Aude region in the Languedoc is one of the most unspoilt regions in France. Set amidst vineyards and fields of sunflowers, the tiny Hameau of Peyre Blanque is in the centre of the Razčs - a wonderful area with many villages built in the medieval circulade design.
The winemaking estate of Domaine Gayda is close by at Brugairolles and is worth a visit with its wonderful restaurant (offering an affordable menu at lunchtime), its wine-tasting courses and its breathtaking view of the Pyrenees.
Mirepoix is a 15th century medieval bastide town with a wonderful central square, Place des Couverts. It is surrounded by fabulous timber-framed medieval houses which form broad covered walkways sheltering the many shops, restaurants and bars.
Limoux, famed for its sparkling blanquette wine, straddles the river Aude. Its wide central square, Place de la Republique, buzzes with activity, especially during the markets which are held on Fridays, and, during July and August, on Tuesday evenings.
Carcassone is the largest town in the area and boasts many attractions with bars and restaurants to suit every pocket and taste. Famed for its spectacular medieval walled city (complete with jousting knights in the summer) Carcassonne also has a great deal more to offer the visitor. The music festival in July attracts world class performers, and La Bastide festival provides free concerts and a breathtaking firework display on Bastille day. The Canal du Midi runs through Carcassonne and is a relaxing way of exploring the region. Boats can be hired in Carcassonne by the hour, or for a day or longer, and the towpath provides easy walking or cycling.
The history of the area is defined by association with the Cathar movement, the legacy of which can be found in the wealth of castles scattered across the countryside. Although 'La Cité' in Carcassone is the best preserved, Montsegur, Queribus, Peyrepertuse and Puilaurens are also spectacular Cathar castles worth a visit.
Directions
A number of budget airlines fly to Carcassonne (30 minute drive); Beziers (1 hour's drive) and Toulouse (90 minutes drive). All these airports have car hire facilities.
If you are driving down the autoroutes you'll find they are usually easy motoring as they are far less busy than motorways in the UK. Carcassone is 9 - 10 hours from the French channel ports. Villa Toto is 20 minutes from the Bram junction on the A61.
