Description
Dar Hajra is hidden away in a stand of pine forest just above the undiscovered ‘white village’ of Montecorto, 15 kilometers to west of Ronda. From the house’s rocky perch you are treated to a stunning, wrap-around view of the peaks of the Grazalema National Park.
You reach the house via a steep track which arcs up through the forest to a mountain spring. From here a path flanked by rosemary, lavendar, honeysuckle and mint climbs up to the house’s main entrance. It looks deceptively traditional from the outside. Once you pass through the door you’ll probably simply gasp ‘wow!’ This is a house where fantasy came first in the design brief.
The Sitting Room
The mountainside has been wrapped into the fabric of the building and the rock strata add a stunning decorative element - Dar Hajra means ‘House of the Rocks’ in arabic. A pyramidal atrium is the viusal axis around which the open-plan lounge/diner/kitchen turns: sunlight floods in during the day and you look up to starry skies at night. Three huge drop-arched windows lead out to the terrace. To one side is a study with more books and CDs, as well as a Mac computer with free 24 hours fast internet access.
The Pool
At one end is the infinity edge plunge pool whose waters seem to merge with the sky. Just beyond the pool a path winds up to a spectacular solarium. Each window of the house brings in a different part of the stunning view southwards, including those of the study. Here are hundreds of reference books including those written by Dar Hajra’s owner. There’s a huge collection of Cds (flamenco, blues, jazz, classical, world, folk) and DVDs, as well as a computer with free 24 hour Internet connection and satellite TV.
The Kitchen
The kitchen/diner is as spectacular as the rest of the house with a large stainless steel fridge, black slate floors and everything you need to self-cater in style. There are masses of herbs and spices. A good bottle of red wine will be awaiting you as well as a bottle of cava in the fridge.
The Bedrooms
There are two bedrooms. The larger has a king size double bed and walk-in wardrobe. At the very top of the house, reached by a staircase that winds between the rocks, is a second bedroom with access to a large roof terrace. All bedding is of the best quality.
The Bathroom
The bathroom is another flight of fantasy with large round tub sculpted between the rocks and an enormous shower rose. Run a bath, pour in the essential oils, light a candle: there’s plenty of room for two.

Location description
Most guests who stay at Dar Hajra don’t move that far. It can be hard to drag yourself away from the house and those views. And with so many books, CDs and DVDs you may just want to stay at home and abandon yourself to the peace and beauty.
Ronda is just a quarter of an hour from the village and is famous for the extraordinary gorge that cuts between the old and new quarters. A visit is a must and there are several museums, art galleries and mansion houses that should not be missed. There is good shopping here, too: best buys include excellent shoes, leather belts and bags, and locally made pottery.
There are masses of excellent restaurants close by including the Michelin-starred ‘Tragabuches’ in Ronda. And all of the local villages have friendly tapas bars where you can try the local wine, best drunk young as 'mosto'.
Montecorto is a quiet village with two restaurants, a number of bars, several small shops and very friendly locals. Wander down from Dar Hajra through narrow streets to buy fresh bread, fish and vegetables then stop at Pepe’s huerta (vegetable garden) on the way back up to buy fresh, seasonal organic fruit and veggies.
Acinipo is a spectacular Roman theatre, hewn out of solid limestone standing on a high plateau just above the village. The Grazalema Park begins, literally, on Dar Hajra’s doorstep. This is one of the most beautiful tracks of mountain in Europe, with an astonishingly diverse flora and fauna. There are deep gorges, high peaks and some of Spain’s most attractive rural architecture. Most villages in the Park date back to the Moorish period and their names reflect their Berber origins: Zahara, Benamahoma, Torre Alháquime…
La Cueva de la Pileta - a visit to the Pileta cave to see its 25000 year old troglodyte paintings is a must.
Los Pueblos Blancos - the pretty 'white’ villages of Grazalema, Zahara and Setenil are all close by.
Vineyard Visits – Ronda has now fewer than a dozen vineyards all within easy driving distance of Dar Hajra. The area is now producing some of southern Spain’s best wines. Tours and tastings can be arranged.
Sevilla, just an hour and a half to the west, makes a good day excursion.
Granada can be visited as a day trip. There is a good train service which dovetails perfectly with a visit to the Alhambra.
Jerez is just an hour away. There there are numerous sherry bodegas which can be visited and the Royal School of Equestrian Art.
The beaches of the Costa del Sol are an hours drive to the south. The lesser-known Atlantic coast beaches are a couple of hours to the west.
Other activities
Paragliding
Algodonales, just a few kilometres west of Montecorto, is home to a number of paragliding schools and has recently staged the World Championship. Courses can be arranged for beginners as well as tandem flights.
Flamenco & Other music
There is a strong flamenco tradition in the area. The nearest traditional peńa (flamenco club) is in Ronda and there are also shows of song and dance in the old town. During the summer months all of our local ferias have flamenco concerts as part of the celebrations. Ronda has regular concerts of classical music as well as occasional operatic events in the Plaza de Toros.
Horse riding
Horse trekking into the high sierra can be arranged at stables just a ten minute drive from the house.
Cycling
Bike hire can be easily arranged in Ronda and guided tours can be arranged departing from El Tejar. There are excellent cycle ways in the area including the Via Verde which runs along an abandoned railway line. And there are plenty of more challenging tracks for mountain biking.
Ballooning
There is no more thrilling a way of viewing the Ronda mountains than from a balloon. End your once-in-a-lifetime flight with a champagne breakfast overlooking Ronda’s old town.
Bird Watching
The area around Grazalema and Ronda is a great place for orinithology, especially for spotting the big raptors. There are binoculars and guide books at El Tejar and guided trips can be arranged with an excellent English-speaking ornithologist.
Sailing & Canoeing
Just a ten minute drive from El Tejar is the Zahara reservoir where different water sports are on offer. Swimming is also possible at a number of secluded coves along the lakeside.
Walking
El Tejar, at the northern edge of the beautiful Grazalema Natural Park and close to the Sierra de las Nieves park, could be a great base for a walking holiday.
El Tejar’s owner leads guided walks in the area. He has written his own walking guide 'Walking in Andalucía' which has become a trusted companion for hundreds of walkers. The book is now in its fifth edition and describes walks in Andalusia's most beautiful National Parks, including six walks close to El Tejar. There will be a copy of the book in the house. 'Walking in Andalucía' by Guy Hunter-Watts (Santana: ISBN 84-89954-55-0) can be ordered from the publisher's website: www.santanabooks.com There are also copies available at El Tejar as well as copies of Guy's 'Small Hotels & Inns of Andalucía' (Santana: ISBN 84-89954-30-5) which can also be ordered from www.santanabooks.com The book lists his 125 favourite places to stay in Southern Spain.
The Walk of the Roman Mines. This walk is taken from ‘Walking in Andalucía’. It begins and ends in Montecorto.
Starting point: El Tejar Difficulty: Medium/Difficult Distance: 13 km (14.5 if you visit El Gastor)
Timings: Allow: 6/7 hours.
Actual walking time: Approx. 4 hours and 20 minutes.
This full day hike heads straight out from El Tejar. For the first hour you climb steadily upwards and as you reach the top of the first ridge you are rewarded with beautiful views to the west, out across the reservoir to Zahara and its Moorish castle. After dipping in, then out of, a forgotten valley you again descend, cross the Angostura stream, then climb steeply up to the top of a third ridge. From here you can either drop down once again to visit the pretty village of El Gastor or begin the loop back to El Tejar. You have one long climb on this leg, out of the Angostura valley to a broad farm track. From here the rest of the walk is plain sailing as you contour round the side of the Malaver mountain (1122m) through a beautiful stand of oak trees. Views once again open out to the west. Eventually the track runs in to meet with the one that you followed earlier in the day and leads you back to Montecorto and El Tejar.
