Description
Sahara, Rock, Wadebridge, Cornwall
Sleeps 1-9 (11)
Sahara is within 5 minutes walk of the Porthilly beach at Rock and within walking distance of the local amenities and St Enedoc Golf Club. It has a sunny aspect and is warm and welcoming for family holidays and Cornish getaways being well equipped for large or small numbers. From the house one can walk up across the Golf course and dunes which gives spectacular views of the island and headlands at the mouth of the Camel Estuary and out to the Atlantic. Dogs are allowed on some of the local beaches and dune areas.
Comfortable and with sea views from the garden, and West facing bedrooms, it has full central heating and an open fire for the winter, and an outside table, chairs and BBQ for those warmer summer days.
The house is positioned in a cul de sac off Rock Road and there is ample parking in the drive for 4 or 5 cars boats, etc. The house sleeps 9 in four bedrooms and in addition one of the sofas in the sitting room can be folded out into a double bed.
Local shops include - Newsagents, Bakery, Butchers, Post Office, Spar, Delicatessen, Petrol Station and the Estate agents. There are also some boutiques, beach shops and pubs and restaurants. During the summer and at busy times of year there are usually arts and crafts for sale at The Rock Institute, The Rock Art Group (Cowrie) and The Salty Dog (Porthilly Lane). Down off the beach is a Ferry that runs to and fro across the Camel Estuary to Padstow from morning to dusk throughout the year.
Rock is situated near the mouth of the Camel Estuary and is ideal for walking by the sea, golfing at St Enedoc Golf Club, watersports such as waterskiing, sailing, swimming, fishing, windsurfing and kite surfing. Just along the coast: kayaking (Port Quinn or Wadebridge),surfing and boarding (2.5 miles to Polzeath) and cycling along the Camel trail (either taking the Ferry across to Padstow, or from Wadebridge 6 miles). Longer trips out can take in The Eden Project, Tintagel castle, Port Isaac fishing village, horse riding, adventure centres, etc. There are various brochures and business cards of things to do and see on the bookshelves in the hall and a visitors book to leaf through and read about the exploits of former visitors.
The house itself consists of:
Ground Floor : Hallway, sitting room, dining room, WC, kitchen, utility room and the former garage now used as a carpeted playroom and store for your boating, walking or golfing gear.
The sitting room is large and very light with four comfortable sofas and various cushions and a small desk and chair with a visitors computer. There is wireless internet so bring your lap-top if you want to access it. There is also a digital TV, DVD, video player and music centre.
The dining room has a large elliptical one piece table which can seat up to twelve and is friendly to talk either across or around making it ideal for large or small groups. It is a light room with patio doors to the front lawn and a hatch through to the kitchen which makes serving simple and ensures that the cooks are still involved with the party. If the weather is fine, meals can be taken out to the large teak garden table on the west side of the house.
The Kitchen is well equipped and easy to work in, with a large double drainer double sink, extensive work surfaces and cupboards and a central table. The oven stack consists of two fan ovens and a high power microwave with a 5 burner gas hob on one side and an additional grill microwave and bread maker on the other. There is a dishwasher, large fridge-freezer, under work surface fridge and deep fat fryer also available. A separate door leads into the Utility Room with a washing machine and separate tumble dryer. The large Belfast enamel sink is suitable for washing walking boots and wetsuits, etc and taking them straight out of the adjacent back door to dry on the large clothes airer outside. Location description
Many people come to Rock to enjoy the fishing, sailing, surfing, waterskiing or sea kayaking. For those not interested in watersports there is a fine golf course at St Enedoc, birdwatching along the estuary, wonderful walks along the North Cornwall coastal path and across the dunes. Fun on the beach with family and friends (Porthilly beach is closest with a shallow beach ideal for toddlers or Rock beach which is much larger and can be ideal for kite flying and beach games), bicycle riding along the Camel Trail (Padstow/Wadebridge/Bodmin) and horse riding on the moors. Historic fishing villages to visit such as Port Isaac, Padstow and Mevagissy and King Arthur's seat at Tintagel. Truro the main city is a lovely place to visit and browse the smaller individual shops and of course one can also go to Plymouth, Bude, Newquay and Bodmin.
Good places to eat out either in local pubs - The Mariners, Pityme Inn or at Chapple Amble or restaurants such as Rick Stein's etc.

Directions
Take the M5 towards Exeter.
Exeter Services is the last 24 hour fuel station on the route so refuel there if you need to. It is a further 80 miles to Rock. In an emergency you can detour slightly off the route at Bodmin to reach the 24 hour fuel at the ASDA supermarket.
Exit from M5 Junction 31 onto the A30 following - Okehampton, Launceston and Bodmin. On the approach to Bodmin slow down after the airport sign as the slip road comes upon you very early.
Exit to Bodmin. Take the Bodmin slip road to BODMIN TOWN CENTRE and then follow right and right again etc. to leave Bodmin on the A389 for Wadebridge 6 miles.
On the approach to Wadebridge, pass TRELAWNEY GARDEN CENTRE and stay on the main bypass road up to the large roundabout at which you turn left following town centre. After 100 metres turn RIGHT at the mini roundabout onto the B3314 to Rock 6.5 miles. Watch out for the narrow stretch of road.
After one mile at the traffic lights cross the single track Trewornan bridge, and after a further 1 miles of rather narrow lanes turn left to Rock. Follow the main road into the village (rumble paint and 30 mph sign before sharp left bend).
Continue along Rock Road and pass:
The PITYME INN on the left.
Parade of shops (SPAR, Fish & Chips, Estate Agents) on the right,
followed by Dis Pantry, Butchers and Rock Bakery.
Pass TEXACO Clock Garage on the left.
Parade of shops: Restaurant, Estate Agents, Rock Shop, and Post Office on the left.
Porthilly Lane on the left and Village hall on the right.
The Road now swings right and left and then straightens out down to the sea. Turn RIGHT into Green Lane / Rock Villas and then turn RIGHT again into FORLAZE ROAD. Sahara is the first house on the RIGHT hand side. We usually reverse into the drive which helps with unloading and is safer when driving out next time.
