    Description

    This is our family French Holiday home and when not in use by us is offered for rent for anything from 2 to 6 persons. It is as suitable for the elderly grandparents as is is for babies and young children. Arrive in the Place du Marche, open the eight foot original oak doors, over the cobbles and you are in a wisteria covered courtyard offering secure and peaceful seclusion. This is also a secure covered area to store your bicycles (or these can be hired locally)
    There are two houses with a central open air courtyard. The Town house is locked and unoccupied when the Garden House is rented.

    Our Garden house is arranged over three floors connected by the original wooden staircase.
    The entrance hallway leads to the living room with two sofas, large flat screen TV+DVD, with a SAT recorder box, CD player and FREE WiFi.
    There is also a second flat screen TV connected to French 'Orange' TV channels.
    For cooler evenings there is a wood burning stove.
    There is full oil central heating available for winter months.
    We have a library of books, films, CD's, children's toys and games.
    The living room has double doors (with safety gate if required) opening onto the patio and garden.
    The modern kitchen/dining area has spacious storage, a 6ft fridge/freezer and a separate fridge that can be used for drinks. It is fully equipped with ceramic hob and fan oven, Bosch dishwasher and microwave.
    All our cooking utensils,cookery books and MP3/iPod player and charger.are available for your use.
    There is a large oak dining table that seats 8.
    There is also a high chair and toddler seat available, if required.

    The ground floor also has a large bathroom and shower, with utility area (washing machine/tumble dryer/iron and board) and a separate toilet.

    The first floor has two huge wood floored bedrooms both with newly refurbished adjacent bathrooms - The yellow room (with double bed and an extra single bed) has the large bathroom, shower and a separate toilet and the Blue Room (with double bed and full size cot) has a fully tiled shower room and toilet.
    The second floor has a further two large double bedrooms. The Pink has twin single beds and a travel cot and the green a double bed and a single bed.
    Although the house has 4 large bedrooms and can sleep 10 it is only offered for rental for a maximum of 6.
    Pets are allowed, on request, but must be kept in ground floor areas and are not allowed on soft furnishings.

    The house is child/toddler friendly with an inventory of all our baby/child equipment (free to borrow). The walled back garden is mainly laid to lawn with established fruit trees and Rose bushes. It is completely private and due to Cardinal Richelieu's town plan enjoys the sun from sunrise to sunset. The patio area has sun loungers and a large table and chairs seating 8. The built in paddling pool (converted from a garden pond!) is great for cooling off in or for children to play in.

    The central courtyard is also a great area for children to safely play in as completely enclosed from the square outside by large original oak doors. It is also a cool, safe shady area to leave your dog. We also use this area for eating outside and there is a BBQ and table and chairs for 8. The Oak doors lead directly to the Market Square, with cafe life, restaurants and Boulangerie, Charcuterie, Supermarket, Bank and Post office all a few minutes walk.
    Free Parking is available in the Square outside the front doors.

    Location description

    Richelieu is a small, peaceful, southern Loire town but with all amenities -1000 acre park with tennis, playgrounds, outdoor swimming pool (summer only) restaurants, bars, supermarket, boulangerie, etc. within a few minutes’ walk. Great for cyclists with many 'off road' routes. The area is known as the Garden of France and for good reason, local markets are full year round with fresh seasonal produce. The local tourist office is adjacent to our house in the Place du Marche and will give all up to date information on local events or this is available on their website:www.ville-richelieu.fr

    All the major Chateaux are in driving distance: Azay, Villandry, Loches, Saumur, Usse, Chenonceaux along with many smaller and different interesting ones (in our house book). Chinon and the new historic tour of the Castle is well worth a visit along with Tours and Poitiers. Families enjoy Futuroscope, Zoo at Doue, leisure parks at Moncontour and St Cyr, golf courses and River activities on the Vienne all within an hours drive.

    Other activities

    Cycling, Canoeing, Walking and Horse riding are all popular local activities.Many local vineyards worth visiting.There is a small local cinema in Richelieu which has films either in English with French subtitles or vice versa- amazing place!

    Local market in les Halles opposite our house on Mondays and Fridays. large farmers markets also in Loudun and Chinon. Wine Fairs, broquantes, festivals held in many villages all info from the Richelieu website.

    Futuroscope, Chateaux, Abbeye de Fontevaud, Saumur, Chinon, Chateau de Rivau (children)

    Directions

    Richelieu is approximately 5 hrs from Calais, 4 hrs from Dieppe & 3 ˝ hrs from Caen ferry ports using the French motorway network or 1 hr from Tours (Ryan Air) or Poitier airports or rail stations with car hire available.

    A fabulous town house in the central square of Richelieu. We had a wonderful time there, so comfortable and well equipped, it was home from home. We have always stayed in the country on previous visits to France but this time enjoyed living in the centre of town with all the facilities on offer, a lovely big park just off the square, nice restaurants around the square, a little supermarket round the corner and lovely French markets twice a week in the square, both bric a brac and food !!! We found lots of places to visit in the region with a numerous choice of Château, wineries and beautiful countryside and when all that got too much or too hot, we just relaxed in one of the two courtyards, one in full sun with the benefit of a paddling pool to dip your toes in or the second courtyard where it is lovely and cool sitting underneath a rambling wisteria - bliss! So glad we found this property and we can thoroughly recommend it.

    I wouldn't normally write a review but we enjoyed our holiday so much, that I thought I would. Your house was perfect in every way – lots of space, really well kitted out, a lovely garden and the splash pool was loved by the children as well as us (I sat on a chair in it reading a book which is a luxury as I never have time to read!). It was also an added bonus that the garden was totally dog proof! Great to go out of the big door at the front from the quiet of the house to being in the middle of everything – we loved the park and the swimming pool along with the great choice of bars and restaurants. Amazing not to have to drive.

    Going back next year!

    I apologise for taking so long to email but I just wanted to say that we had a fantastic week in Richelieu back in August. Your house is absolutely lovely, with the beautiful spiral staircase, the massive bedrooms and the pretty courtyard and garden areas. It is extremely well equipped and you could not possibly need anything else. We felt so at home there and really relaxed.

    The house is brilliant being right on the market square and the little supermarket just around the corner was perfect for a quick shop. We really loved the beautiful park which was great for walking the dog.
    Loved the fortress at Chinon and had a good day in Tours. The countryside is beautiful and so many chateaux!! I'd love to visit them all but my teenagers are not so keen!

    It was a shame we only had a week there as it went so quickly and we hope to return for a couple of weeks.

    So, many, many thanks for letting us share your little piece of France.
