Directions
From the M6, leave at Junction 36 and take the first exit signed Barrow-in-Furness. We are on average around 60 minutes driving time from this junction.
Follow the dual carriageway and then take the first turn-off, the A590. Down the slip road, you’ll come to a roundabout. Take the first exit, A590 Barrow and Ulverston.
Follow the A590 (single and dual carriageways and 2 roundabouts). Note, this road has a speed limit of 60mph in places and two speed cameras in close proximity.
There is a petrol station at Newby Bridge along this road. It is the last filling station (except a small and expensive one) before Eskmeals.
Eventually you will come to a 3rd roundabout and signs for the A5092 to Barrow and Workington (2nd exit). Take this road and stay on it. You'll eventually begin seeing signs for Barrow. Dont turn off, stay on the main road.
Head for Broughton-in Furness which you bypass and then drive through Foxfield. Keep going. You’ll pass the High Cross Inn.
A few miles later, you will come to traffic lights and then drive over the Duddon bridge.
Keep following this road (steep hill). A couple of miles further you will come to a right-bend with a left ‘branch’ to Millom. Ignore this and stay on the A595. (Be careful at this junction, as drivers often assume that you’re turning off to Millom, and pull out in front of you).
Eventually you will arrive at a T-juction. Turn right and continue for approximately 5 miles until you reach Bootle.
Take the first left turn, sign posted Eskmeals (Bootle Stores is just to your right). Stay on this road for about 3 miles until you reach the coast and beach. Turn right here and continue along the coast road for around one mile.
After about a mile, you will see several large buildings to your left. 50 yards after the building’s main entrance is a turning right to ‘Monks Moors’. Ignore that and carry on for about a further 50 yards where . . .
. . . You will arrive at a gravel track on your right and a ‘Public Footpath’ sign. You will see woodland in front of you.
Drive down this short track and under the bridge. Take the signposted left fork. Eskmeals House is approximately 200 yards along this track.

“Just to say thank you so much for your hospitality, we had the best weekend and your house is the perfect country retreat for a large group. Your local pub the ‘Brown Cow’ couldn't have made us feel more welcome and I am certainly planning on returning with my family! The area is dramatically picturesque and we particularly loved the coal burning fires that you so kindly lit for us every evening. Thanks again! Kirstie.”
“Thank you for our stay in your wonderful house. The balance of everything was just right - a glorious huge manor house with a comfortable cottage feel, sophisticated for adults but toddler friendly, private and in lovely grounds, but close to attractions. We particularly loved playing hide and seek, and carving our Christmas goose at the fantastic banqueting room. We loved it, and we hope to be back soon. Thanks, Jenny.”
“We would like to say thank-you very much for making us all feel so so comfortable in your house. It was a perfect venue to hold a special anniversary with all the family. The fires in both rooms were great. The beds were so comfy and all the rooms were really big. We visited the local pub The Brown Cow and the food was gorgeous. They went out of their way to look after all 20 of us. We would highly recommend their pizzas as they also do takeaways. The Ratty pub was also lovely in Ravenglass and so was the Ratty railway. Thank you once again. Thanks, Nicola & Everyone.”
“I am just back from an AMAZING holiday at your house with 17 of my friends. The house is completely perfect for big groups. The bedrooms are all huge, the kitchen and prep area are great, BBQ fantastic, real fires lovely on cold winter nights . . . and the grounds are beautiful – I really can’t fault the place at all. Thank you so much !!!” Suzanne.
