Swim in the sea by the rocks known as Petra tou Romiou, where she was believed to have risen from the waves, make a pilgrimage to her sanctuary at Kouklia, or visit the grotto near Polis where she was supposed to have bathed. The Pafos region is the perfect place to celebrate a wedding or go for your honeymoon.
Pafos: A Good Reason For All Seasons
Pafos is located on the southwest coast of the island and is sheltered from the north by the Troodos mountains. It has a temperate climate, one of the healthiest in the whole Mediterranean.
In the Pafos region of Cyprus you can bask in sunshine all the year round and feel the warmth of a welcoming people with a reputation for hospitality. Polis
Neo Chorio area
The village of Neo Chorio lies on the northwest coast of Cyprus, nestling in the hills above the small fishing port of Latchi and the legendary Baths of Aphrodite. It is the last village before the Akamas wilderness begins and is therefore also known as The Gateway to the Akamas.
Traditionally a community of shepherds, farmers and fishermen, the village has taken progress in its stride, growing rapidly with people wishing to buy property and come to live in this beautiful area. Tourism too has had an impact in the area.
The architecture in this village is dominated by stone houses and narrow winding streets which provide a traditional Cypriot atmosphere. With two Cypriot tavernas, a small grocery store and a couple of 'kafenions' where locals gather to socialize and chat over thick, strong coffee the theme of the village is laid back.
The Akamas peninsular covering approximately 230 square kilometres is where you will find wild landscape, amazing natural beauty, deep gorges and wide sandy bays.
In early spring the area is carpeted with wild anemones and cyclamen, for which the region is famous, bloom. There are many wild orchids to discover, some of them quite rare and in April a dark red tulip, found only in Cyprus, flowers on the Akamas. The area also holds one of the world's main migratory routes and is therefore a magnet for birdwatchers. So whether your interest lies in flowers or birds, or simply in walking and delighting in the magnificent scenery, Neo Chorio makes a perfect base from which to explore the Akamas. The Forestry Department has laid out several nature trails, one of which is actually an old trade route used by camel traders who, long ago, transported gypsum down to a large wooden jetty near the Baths of Aphrodite for shipment overseas.
Of interest is also the Triskelion Pottery where exquisite, handmade reproductions of ancient Cypriot ceramics are produced using original methods and materials as well as the Hawkins Art Studio with its permanent display of original paintings, drawings and books by Harry and Sheila Hawkins residents in the area for many years. Traditional rug making is still carried out and a working loom is on view.
On the outskirts of the village there is a shaded lookout point. The views from here are beautiful in the extreme and it is one of the few places, where you can sit and enjoy the view of the sea on both sides of the island at the same time.
