    Location description

If you are not familiar with Swaledale, it is the most northerly of the Yorkshire Dales, very close to the border with County Durham. It is a smaller, more enclosed dale than some of the others, and this gives it a more intimate feeling. The top end of the dale is truly wild, with high fells, and the road up the dale leads over and down into Cumbria. This is wonderful walking and driving country, and the home of the Tan Hill Inn, the highest pub in England.

Coming back down the dale, the villages of Keld, Muker and Thwaite are typical dales villages, with Muker the home of the famous Swaledale Woollens shop. Spectacular passes lead over into Wensleydale and a drive across the Buttertubs Pass is a never-to-be-forgotten experience.

Between Muker and Gunnerside, an old Viking settlement, is Ivelet, a tiny hamlet with a mediaeval bridge, which must not be missed. This is one of our favourite family picnic spots, with opportunities for paddling and making dams in the river. If you cross over the river between Low Row and Healaugh, and walk or drive along Harkerside, the views over the Swaledale are breathtaking. You can also walk this route, in the opposite direction, direct from the cottage. Somewhere along here, you will find the roadside clearing that we call “our back garden”, and which is another favourite picnic spot. Or drive over into Arkengarthdale from Low Row and pass the ford used in the James Herriot TV series. Then on into Langthwaite, also used in the TV series, which has a tiny, but perfect, village pub and shop, all accessed over a narrow, hump–backed bridge. Reeth, the capital of the Dale, is only a small village, but it has a huge village green.

All this is within a few miles of the cottage, even within walking distance if that is what you wish. If you can tempt yourself away from Swaledale, there is plenty to do in the surrounding area. Or, of course, you could just stay in the cottage and relax, with the occasional foray out to the Bridge Inn opposite!

    Great Holiday

We first stayed at Corner House around 10 years ago and have been back every year since and enjoyed every holiday. It is an ideal base for touring the Dales, walking or just relaxing.
There is a lovely river walk to nearby Reeth, where there are many pubs and tea-rooms or a shorter route via the fields and a car journey only takes 5 minutes. We found Ivy Cottage Tea Rooms in Reeth one of the best. Alternatively The Bridge Inn is only over the road from Corner House and ideal for a cosy drink or a meal.
We have stayed at Corner House in both Spring and Autumn and it is always very welcoming, warm and cosy especially on chilly evenings with the open fire. It contains everything you will need for your holiday and someone is always on hand if you should need any help.

" This was our second new year at Corner Cottage and once again it did not disappoint. Beautiful house, short of nothing and we all had a great stay. Weather was kind, and we did some lovely walking. Visited the pub opposite and the staff were great having taken over a month ago. Please support them if you can as the hospitality business really is on its knees and when its gone there will be no coming back.Bottle of wine and milk was very much appreciated.

" This was our second visit to corner house and Grinton, we once again enjoyed our stay, the cottage was clean and the welcoming gifts were really a lovely thought. The area is beautiful and Reeth is a great village to visit especially the sculptor who makes fantastic hanging bats, I have four now. I would recommend the cottage and the Yorkshire Dales to anyone who wants great walks, fantastic scenery and friendly people. "

" Our second stay at Corner House.
The house is perfectly placed for numerous walks around swaledale, touring around the north yorks dales and the pub across the road.
A lovely cottage in perfect surroundings.

" Delightful week's stay in this well-equipped house which is perfectly situated in Grinton. House was fully equipped and the location provided an excellent base for exploring both the immediate local area on foot as well as visiting surrounding attractions. Highly recommend and look forward to a future return visit. Thank you Nigel and Paula for your hospitality! "

" Corner house was a home from home during these uncertain times. The area was beautiful and the people very friendly. Although there was still some work taking place it was not intrusive and the workmen were very friendly. The house was clean and felt safe during this period. We thoroughly enjoyed our holiday and are definitely considering returning next year to Yorkshire and Corner House. "

" The location of the cottage is fantastic, with the church opposite and the ‘Pub’ across the road. A lovely home for our family to stay with everything you need. A truly great place for walking, which the family (and dog) enjoyed immensely. We have been coming to Swaledale (Reeth and Grinton) for 30 years, and this has been one of the best."

" We were very comfortable in your lovely, warm, well equipped cottage which was ideally placed for walking, cycling and running. The North Yorkshire Dales are very beautiful and this was my first time visiting the area. Lots of lovely tea rooms and craft places, did some very early Xmas shopping! Both my husband and I appreciated how clean the cottage was and also the lovely bottle of wine left for us on our arrival, a very nice touch. Thank you for sharing your home."
    — Dora Ashcroft, 01 Sep 2018

" We had a wonderful week in your cosy and well-equipped cottage. We loved your attention to detail, the ‘welcoming touches’ (the biscuits, the milk, the bottle of wine). The location of your house opposite the church is absolutely remarkable. The weather was great and we had many fantastic walks. It’s a lovely place to stay. Thank you."
    — The Trimborns, 10 Aug 2018

" Our 3rd visit to Corner House. This time, accompanied by daughter, son-in-law and Reggie, their little dog. The all loved the Dales and Grinton. Loved Corner House, as we do. Did lots of travelling round the area, and we took great delight in showing them around. We were blessd with wonderful weather, unbroken sunshine every day! In fact, it was often a bit too hot. Only thing missing was the water, rivers, streams and falls all so low! (never seen that before).
Thank you once again Nigel and Paula for the loan of your lovely cottage. Hope there will be a 4th time.."
