Description
We fell in love with Les Hirondelles the first time we walked into it. Wandering out onto its balcony, gazing at the view and hearing the sound of the river Verdon tumbling down the valley we knew we'd found our little mountain home. Everywhere you look, the views are magnificent and the house, as our friend put it, just wraps itself around you. It sits on the side of a mountain in the commune of Clignon Bas, 5 minutes from Colmars les Alpes and is named after the swallows that flit to and fro in front of the balcony at evening time, catching insects.
We have owned our little property for many years and it took much hand wringing to decide to rent it out to others. We have never classed it as merely a 'holiday home', but our 'home in France'. We have made it as homely and comfortable as possible and our recent lovely guests have given us 5-star reviews. It's a typical 'mountain' house and the decor is exactly that, with wooden clad walls and beams. It is extremely 'snuggly' in wintertime and bright and airy in summer.
The house sleeps a maximum of 6 in 3 bedrooms (though couples and families of 4 have found it ideal) each with double bed, 2 chests of drawers and wardrobe space. all accessed by an artisan built wooden spiral staircase.
Downstairs is a large open plan living area with American style kitchen. The living area has an oak beamed inset fireplace for burning logs, comfy sofas, coffee table, dining table and six chairs. Double doors open out onto the balcony that runs the length of property with glorious views down the valley.
The kitchen is very well equipped with more than 6 people could want. Its tiled surfaces are easy to wipe down and keep clean.
The little shower room is off the kitchen and has a great multi-jet shower panel. The local water pressure is fantastic, so your shower promises to be very invigorating! The automatic washing machine is also kept here.
The inner hallway has a utility cupboard with all manner of household appliances - upright vacuum cleaner, electric broom, steam cleaner, iron and ironing board, clothes dryer and pegs, mop and mop bucket, brooms, dust pan and brush. The toilet is also off the inner hall.
The outer hall contains a ski locker and another cupboard used by us to house all our DIY needs. We also store some of our outside garden furniture in here when not in use.
Safety measures include a smoke alarm, fire blanket and fire extinguisher. The stair treads are painted with a clear non slip varnish.
It is difficult to list everything as the house is just so well equipped with lots of homely additions.
The prices are inclusive of all bed linen, 2 bath towels per room, tee towels, cleaning materials, store cupboard basics, electricity, gas, cleaning and logs and we have offers for repeat guests and two week rentals. Shorter or longer rentals are by negotiation.

Location description
We would love to welcome you to Les Hirondelles, which is located in the commune of Clignon Bas, 5 minutes from Colmars les Alpes, a lovely walled medieval town. It is located within the National Parc du Mercantour, on the boundary that permits habitation, but only 10 minutes from the protected area which occupies an area of 685 sq km. This part of France is quite simply stunning yet only a couple of hours from the hubbub of Nice and the Cote d'Azure. It's an area of mountains and lakes, rivers and waterfalls, forests and quaint towns and villages. It is also where you will find the biggest Ski Area in the southern Alpes. It provides the perfect escape at all times of the year, but is not isolated. You will find numerous restaurants, shops and supermarkets and a wealth of activities to keep you occupied if you wish.
The mountain air is a real tonic which can be enjoyed in spring, summer, autumn or winter. With, on average, 300 days sunshine a year, the skies are often the purest shade of blue and the night skies provide a view of the stars that will take your breath away. Each season is unique, with spring awash with flowers, hot summers with so much to do and enjoy, autumn ablaze with incredible colour and the most perfect snowy winters.
This part of Haute Provence is know as the 'Vallee du Haute Verdon'. The river Verdon has its source in the mountains near the Col d'Allos and it starts its journey by plunging down the valley, through Colmars les Alpes before passing through the Gorges du Verdon, the deepest Canyon in western Europe, which it cut over millennia. This is a must on any itinerary, though it can get quite busy in summer months. Dams have been constructed along the river creating two huge lakes, Lac Castillon and Lac St Croix, both of which have beaches and safe swimming areas.
The "Train de Pigne" (Pine Cone Train), stops at the small station of Thorame Haute, about 15 minutes from the house. This narrow gauge railway, built in the late 19th century, runs from Nice to Digne les Bains and back several times throughout the day. It has its own small station behind the main station in Nice and it wends its way through amazing scenery, stopping at little villages along the way. Should you want to pop down to Nice or Digne les Bains for the day and don't fancy the drive, then this is the perfect choice for a memorable trip.
In summertime, the activities available for the energetic or not quite so energetic are numerous and varied. The Tour de France went over the Col d'Allos in 2015 and ordinary cyclists attempt it too but it's definitely not for the faint hearted. The mountain biking set can get their thrills by loading their bikes onto the chair lifts which whisk them up the mountain to start their thrill-seeking rides back down again. Marked trails are available for strolling or serious hiking, the Parc de Loisir in Allos has every activity imaginable and will entertain young and old for days. If being exercised to the hilt or frightening yourself half to death isn't your thing, then you can simply relax and take in the glorious scenery.
It wouldn't be right if SKIING wasn't mentioned. The area is known as Espace Lumiere and the linked resorts of La Foux d'Allos and Pra Loup provides 180 km of runs, with a further 50 km at the smaller resort of Seignus just 20 minutes from Les Hirondelles. The resort has grown spectacularly over the years and is ideal for families and couples wishing to avoid the overcrowded slopes and expensive lift passes of the more popular resorts.

Directions
By Road: It is approximately 800 miles from Calais to Les Hirondelles if you take the autoroute. If you take the Route Nationales or local roads the mileage cannot be determined as this is solely down to the variation and detours each individual chooses to take.
To do this in one go would take approximately 12 hours. A more leisurely approach is to take it in two (or even three) stages and book a hotel for the night(s).
The journey from Nice airport takes approximately 2 hours door to door. Nice is sourced by many scheduled and budget airlines, depending upon departure airport.

Lovely Holiday
We have stayed here many years ago, but this time returned with our boys (10 & 6).
We all had a wonderful holiday! You definitely need a car for this holiday, but the views are amazing as you are in the mountains.
Just a short drive from the house is Allos, where they have a lovely swimming lake with a slide and many other activities for the children to do, we went there a few times as the boys loved it.
In the other direction from the house there is Castellane which has a lovely lake, again with activities for the children to do, it also is a lovely place to have a spot of lunch and there a some lovely little shops.
There are the Gouges de Verdon, which is a bit of a drive, but definitely worth it, the scenery is amazing, a very beautiful part of the world to see.
The house itself is a home from home, very well equipped and comfortable. A massive selection of DVDs for the evenings and some games too!
We enjoyed full-on days out and then relaxing with wine and food cooked on the BBQ on the evenings, sitting outside to get the last bit of sunshine.
Fantastic exploring holiday, which our boys loved.
Perfect family holiday
We stayed at Les Hirondelles with our two sons (aged 12 and 10) for a week at the beginning of July. We had never visited this part of France before and Jane and Rob could not have been more helpful in providing us with information about things to see and do in the area. The house itself is very homely and well equipped with 3 very good sized bedrooms. There was everything there that you might need for a week or longer, including a very well stocked DVD collection! Colmars is a beautiful small town and we really enjoyed exploring the area . We had hoped to go mountain / trail biking but the lifts only opened at Seignus at the end of our stay (end of the first week in July) so that's something to be aware of if you're hoping to do similar. Otherwise this was an extremely comfortable and relaxing base for us to spend the first week of our holiday after a very busy time at home and we would thoroughly recommend it. The view from the house is breathtaking and just looking out of the windows or standing on the balcony is therapy in itself! We will definitely consider a return trip in winter for skiing and snowboarding.
A beautiful house with an amazing view
We stayed at Les Hirondelles last year and had the most wonderful holiday. The house is very homely and superbly equipped. It is in an great location and ideal for exploring Haute Provence with its picturesque villages and fantastic scenery. It is a great place to unwind and enjoy all that the area has to offer. Highly recommended.

We stayed here for two weeks & theres plenty to see and do. A lovely well equipped place to stay in the mountains. Beautiful, far-reaching views down the valley from the house. Great for nature lovers/walking in the Alps & cycling. Travelled to Nice easily by car, Verdon Gorge & Castellane. Children enjoyed swimming in the lakes (Castillon & Allos leisure park). Also recommend Forest Adventure tree top climbing down the valley from the house. Verdon Express toboggan was also a big hit! Journey to Barcelonnette over the Col dAllos was exhilarating! (Fantastic views of mountains & deer and marmots!) We even saw a wolf.

We have just returned from a week at Les Hirondelles with our sons aged 6 and 7. We had spent our first week in Nice so this was a great contrast. The chalet was very well equipped and cosy and we were able to enjoy breakfasts and dinners on the terrace due to the lovely weather, whilst experiencing the fantastic view! We took advantage of the facilities in Allos and visited the lake every day so the boys could swim and paddle board etc... We also managed quite a few lovely walks from Allos and Colmars which kept everybody happy. A great week and we would be keen to return at some point.
