    Location description

Our location, in the heart of Montefeltro (northern Le Marche) is perfect for daytripping to many cittŕ d’arte, hilltop towns and villages in Central Italy and visit their valuable cultural heritage along with works by Raphael, Francesco di Giorgio Martini, Piero della Francesca and many other minor artists who worked in this area, birthplace of the Renaissance. We’ll be glad to suggest really interesting off-the-beaten-track itineraries in this little-known region where you’ll discover a different amazing view behind every ridge

The Locanda is located only 12 km south of Urbino, the walled city centre of which is included in the UNESCO Heritage list. With its magnificent Ducal Palace, the numerous art treasures to be found in its beautiful churches and monasteries and the many houses built by wealthy families which stand around the city's streets and alleys Urbino will stun and fascinate you. Raphael was born here. You’ll be able to visit his house and see a fresco painted on the house walls by a very young Raphael and admire enigmatic La Muta in the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche inside the Ducal Palace.

The fortresses designed by Francesco di Giorgio Martini characterize the landscape of the Montefeltro area, from better-known San Leo and Mondavio down to small and unknown wonders such as Sassocorvaro fortress (its plan resembles a tortoise), Cagli, Fossombrone, Sant’Agata Feltria, Montecerignone and Frontone. He was also the creator of the twin-turretted facade of the Ducal Palace in Urbino (the famous Torricini) and the Rampa leading to the Palace from Borgo Mercatale.

In the old times the Via Flaminia was the most important road connecting Rome to the Adriatic Sea and Northern Italy. Its outline through the Province of Pesaro and Urbino went across the present towns of Cantiano, Cagli, Furlo (where you can visit the ancient galleria and part of the structure of the road within the amazing setting of the Furlo Gorge), Fossombrone, Fano and Pesaro. Along the Via Flaminia there are several archeological sites (Forum Sempronii near Fossombrone, Pontericcioli near Cantiano), and the mosaics in Pesaro Basilica and the Bronzi dorati museum in Pergola, as well as many archeological museums.

Sansepolcro, hometown of Piero della Francesca, stands just one hour drive away from the Locanda. Here you can start an itinerary that will lead you to Arezzo where you can visit the marvellous frescos cycle in San Francesco church, to Monterchi to admire the Madonna del Parto and back to Urbino where, in the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche, La Flagellazione and Madonna di Senigallia are exhibited. The itinerary can go on down to the coast to Rimini to see the San Sigismondo Fresco in the Tempio Malatestiano.

    Other activities

The Locanda is the perfect starting point for walks and treks: it stands just a few miles away from beautiful Riserva Naturale Gola del Furlo (Furlo Gorge) with its peculiar flora and fauna (including wolves and some pairs of golden eagles), and from Parco del Sasso Simone and Simoncello with its distinctive geological formations. The beaches and rocky coastlines of Parco del Monte San Bartolo and Conero represent an interesting option compared to the typical Adriatic sandy beaches.
The Grotte di Frasassi (Frasassi Caves), among the biggest in Europe, include a chamber which is large enough to hold Milan cathedral.
In Sansepolcro you can visit the Aboca Museum: a unique collection of books and historical artifacts providing a historical survey of the utilization of herbs through the centuries.
At the Locanda you will find maps of walks and treks.
We have stables available for those who bring their own horses. In addition, our own horses are at our guests' disposal for lessons and walks in the countryside.
After a busy day of visits and walks relax by the pool, enjoying the sweeping view of the landscape and, if you wish, the company of our pets.

Ceramics and Pottery: Near the Locanda you can find three towns that belong to the Associazione Italiana Cittŕ della Ceramica: Urbania, Pesaro and Gubbio. In the three of them you can admire ancient ceramics or buy works reproducing old shapes and decorations or pieces of modern design produced with traditional techniques. In Urbania you may attend summer courses on ceramics.
Production of pottery for home use has been common practice in Fratte Rosa for centuries: wheel-made pieces with a characteristic aubergine-violet enamel. Nowadays three workshops still produce the traditional shapes along with new creations and new colours.
In Urbania you can visit Collezione Maurri Poggi: a gorgeous expo of home-use-pottery containing about 800 pieces from all over Italy and specially from Le Marche, Tuscany and Umbria, the biggest and more important in central Italy.
Paper: In Fermignano stands the building that used to be the paper mill of the Ducato di Urbino; the tradition of paper-making remains in Fabriano (one hour away from the Locanda) where you may visit the Museo della Carta e della Filigrana.
Stone: The carving of sandstone from local quarries has been performed in Sant’Ippolito since the XIV century. The stone-dressers from Sant’Ippolito worked in Italy and abroad, for instance decorating the Popes’ Palace in Avignon. The art of the stone-dressers from Sant’Ippolito is still alive in our days.

Due to its variegated territory ad climate Le Marche offers a wide variety of farm and sea products, organic agriculture is widely practiced throughout the region and traditional productions are being re-discovered and used for a diversified gastronomy deeply rooted into traditions but also interestingly innovative. During the months of September and October Urbino hosts “Voglie d’Autunno”: various events dedicated to local produce and preserving the biodiversity. The DOC wines of Le Marche are increasingly popular and their quality has reached outstanding levels. Some good wineries in the area offer wine tasting.

During the summer months several cultural events are held in the Province like Festival di Musica Antica in Urbino in July and ROF (Rossini Opera Festival) in Pesaro in August.
