    Description

    Welcome to La Perode
An extensively renovated farmstead nestling within the rolling Dordogne countryside. Built from the beautiful honey-coloured limestone that is a feature of the region, La Perode is set within ten acres and was until recent times a working farm.

A major renovation has brought the buildings up to exacting modern standards whilst preserving their charm and harmony within the tranquility of the wider surrounding fields and woodland. Home to a glorious range of flora and fauna, it is a paradise for bird watchers and nature lovers and as an escape from the hustle and bustle of urban life it will hopefully exceed all expectations.

The property is centrally located for a wide range of holiday activities and boasts numerous onsite facilities that include a large swimming pool with a summer kitchen for the private use of our Bread Oven guests. The local town of Rouffignac St Cernin offers a good selection of amenities, including restaurants, shops and that all-important boulangerie.

The Maison du Pain (Bread Oven) is estimated to be at least 150-years old and after a comprehensive refurbishment now consists of five bedrooms and three modern bathrooms. The well-appointed kitchen and dining area complement a large outside BBQ and dining terrace that is partially covered from sun and rain. It is here that the original bread oven is located - a weekly firing of which once provided the bread quotidian for the farm’s family and workers.

The modern kitchen with large breakfast bar provides a wonderful area for those who like to cook and incorporates an electric double-oven range cooker and five-ring ceramic hob. An integrated dishwasher makes for an easier life, as does the modern charcoal BBQ located on the adjacent private terrace that should encourage everyone to get involved in meal preparation.

The bedroom facilities range from a large en-suite with its own quiet ground level terrace, through a spacious timber framed room with private balcony to a cosy loft room with exposed beams, so there is ample space for up to ten or more adults and children.

The three modern bathrooms provide either bath facilities (for a romantic soak) or invigorating power showers to follow your day’s activities, and should you be unlucky with the odd day of rain there is a widescreen TV together with a good selection of VHS / DVD’s and free wireless internet. That said, for the puritans amongst you there are also lots of books and games to be enjoyed and there is a piano in the lounge area ready for a singalong if you have a musician within your party.

During your stay you will enjoy exclusive use of the large heated 12m x 6m pool, with roman steps at one end to facilitate easy access. Pool depth varies from 1m to 1.5m and it is fully enclosed by a norm-compliant security fence with child-proof gated access. An automated pool cover was installed in 2022 for further enhance safety and preserve pool temperatures. There is a pantiled abri (shelter) within this 250m² area that is fitted out with a summer kitchen (with hot and cold running water) to allow for the preparation and cooking of meals using a top-of-the-range Weber gas BBQ with side burner. The large modern fridge can be used for food storage and the chilling of those refreshing drinks, whilst the kitchen is fully equipped with cooking utensils and unbreakable serving ware. This leisure area also sports table tennis and other games facilities and there are plenty of chairs and loungers for sun-worshipers alongside shady nooks for the more sensitive of skin. The hot shower, toilet and beautiful aspect may well result in most of your time being spent in this well-appointed area...

    Location description

The nearby village of Rouffignac-Saint-Cernin-de-Reilhac has an interesting history and via a short drive (or pleasant walk) can provide everything from your daily baguette to your weekly shop. Two popular hotels offer a complete menu with three or four additional bar-restaurants also providing a pleasant distraction, and a busy Sunday market is held throughout the year. At the height of season this lively market is unmissable, providing a wide range of fresh food, local delicacies and interesting vendeurs, and in July and August this same market square hosts a Wednesday nuit marche where stallholders sell local speciality dishes and wine that can be consumed on the tables provided, whilst enjoying some free entertainment. Just five minutes away is our famous grotte (‘cave of a hundred mammoths’) that is part of one of the most extensive underground systems in the region. A subterranean train takes you over 2kms into these caves which are listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage site due to the many prehistoric paintings to be found there.

Further afield, the nearby towns of Le Bugue, Montignac and regional capital Perigueux offer comprehensive shopping and tourist attractions, whilst world-famous Bergerac and the beautiful medieval town of Sarlat are accessible within an enjoyable hour’s drive. Whilst offering many spectacular attractions, the wonderful Dordogne valley can be easily matched by the prehistoric Vezere river valley that holds claim to 30,000 years of continuous human habitation (the longest anywhere in the world). The two rivers converge at nearby Limeuil - yet another lovely place to visit - and given the volume of visitors the region offers many fine restaurants, markets, theme parks and activity pursuits.

Closer to base at La Perode, the lovely village of Les Eyzies is another World Heritage site and houses both the National Prehistoric Museum and several prehistoric sites, including the famous Grottes du Grande Roc. Lovely walks, canoe hire and several restaurants make it a popular destination and at just 15-20 minutes drive is home to some of our favourite café restaurants. Needless to say, there are many more to choose from in the surrounding area, each offering up the delights of local produce, and to whet the appetite we are just to the east of the famous Bergerac and Bordeaux appellations where there are literally hundreds of vineyards to be explored.

    Other activities

Tree rappelling, air balooning, walking, sightseeing, canoeing - the options are almost endless

    Local events

    Night markets in peak season

Thank you for such a wonderful stay- our first all together since the girls were born and it was just perfect! We had everything we needed here and the child-friendly bits like cots and high chairs were a real bonus! We even managed a few visits to Sarlat, Plazac & St Leon when we could get the babies out of the pool. Highly recommend them all for a beautiful few hours wandering and delicious lunches.
Thank you Alec, Annie and Nina – it seems like nothing was too much trouble for you to ensure we enjoyed our stay. We would love to come back soon.

We had a wonderful stay here. The Villa had everything we could need and the pool area was a popular hangout for BBQ, late night swimming and star gazing with the kids. Alec et Annie couldn’t have been more welcoming, it felt like we were visiting family. They gave brilliant advice and information. We were able to balance exploring the area and further afield to appreciate the beauty of the Dordogne, canoeing lots, and relaxing at the villa on other days. Would definitely recommend and visit again. Thank you

First of all thank you for your warm welcoming and for allowing us this week to live and move in your wonderful residence “La Perode”. This is our first and hopefully not our last stay in this beautiful house and area of the Dordogne…
We deeply value your hospitality, love, kindness, zeal and passion to serve people like us and from everywhere in a wonderful way. This is very rare and exceptional in these days. Keep that fire burning! We’ve appreciated every moment and will forever treasure this week of rest, peace, refreshment and vacation. In this environment we honestly heard clearer and deeper the voice of God in this heavenly place. We will return to Belgium in a different way, equipped, inspired, changed and reformed.

Thank you for another wonderful stay at La Perode. With the mixed weather we’ve made the most of all the amenities – board games to swimming pool – and have enjoyed the tranquillity of the surrounding villages and countryside. Thank you Annie, Alec and lovely Nina for your hospitality and kindnesses (pest control to sun glasses mender!) Once again, you’ve made us feel very welcome and we’re sorry to leave.

We had a fantastic week here with the whole family including a 2 year old and a 5 month old. Alec and Annie were extremely welcoming and accommodating to our requests which we are so grateful for. The pool was an absolute joy for everyone and all the little details had been thought of so we could fully relax with the kids. On top of the fantastic house, the location is superb - we had nowhere near enough time to see everything in the region so we will have to come back! Bergerac is beautiful, the many caves are amazing, the village is lovely and the nearby campsite has a little play park which the kids loved. A special holiday that we will not forget. Thank you Alec and Annie

Thank you Alec & Annie for a wonderful 2 weeks at La Perode. We enjoyed the pool so much that we didn’t venture out that much. We had a couple of days when the weather was not that good but the trip to the aquarium at Le Bugue was very interesting and great for a rainy day. We visited Sarlat, which is very pretty, also Montignac is well worth a trip. We’ll miss the visits from Nina! Once again thank you Alec and Annie for being so hospitable and making our time here so enjoyable.

Two years waiting and the fortnight at La Perode has gone in a flash. Have so enjoyed our holiday and the tranquility La Perode offers. Fabulous location and the most amazing pool area / summer kitchen were the standouts for us. But…. topping the list were the delightful Annie & Alec. Warm, welcoming, ever helpful and the most generous providers of endless figs and grapes, all home grown of course. Just wonderful.

We had a wonderful 10 days staying at La Perode. Annie and Alec went out of their way to make sure that we had a great stay. We’ve loved the pool, the BBQ’s, the wildlife… The local area has been great to explore with the children. Just wish we could stay longer!!! See you next time.

Don’t want to leave !! What a fantastic time we’ve had here at La Perode! I think we’ve exhausted the word “heaven”. This part of the Dordogne has so much to see and do but considering the circumstances we have been on cloud nine just to enjoy the gite and pool area. So well equipped!!! Alec and Annie are beyond thoughtful. You made our boy’s 10th birthday one to remember. Eternally grateful. Alexis, Rob, Stanley & Penelope x
We as a family have had a most relaxing and enjoyable stay at La Perode. Our grandchildren have thoroughly enjoyed the pool and their swimming has come on in leaps and bounds. We love the Dordogne as there is so much to explore but we needed to relax, which we’ve certainly managed to do. Thank you Alec and Annie for your wonderful welcome and sharing your beautiful home with us. We will return in a couple of years.

The accommodation and facilities were first class, there was nothing I could fault! The gite was equipped with everything you could possibly need and more. Highlight must be the superb swimming pool with outside kitchen area, we literally spent the whole week enjoying having this fabulous area all to ourselves. We have already booked to return in 2022 and would not hesitate to highly recommend to others. Alec et Annie were lovely hosts who made us feel very welcome. Rouffignac is a pretty little town with all the amenities you need. We ate at the nearby campsite restaurant a couple of times which was very pleasant. Everything you need is within walking distance, although we didn’t venture out very often as the gite and pool were too nice to leave!

Another fabulous time at La Perode – this time for two weeks. First week with family, second week with friends (& Sally the dog). Spent a lot of time in the pool due to the heat wave. Sunday market in the village was great. Ate three meals at the Bleu Soliel campsite – very nice. Thank you again Alec and Annie for your hospitality and good luck with ongoing restoration.

Thank you Alec and Annie for letting us share your beautiful home. What an amazing place. For a naturalist like me La Perode is paradise. It has been a very special week and being able to relax and get away from it all, doing the things I love has been great therapy for me, helping me get over the loss of my Andy. He would have loved it here too. Best wishes. Jane Ashall.
    June 2019

A great two weeks at La Perode. It was so hot (hitting 46DegC on one day) that we spent most of the time at the pool. However, a couple of places which are good to visit:
Montignac – a pretty town with lots of restaurants & a lovely ice cream shop.
Le Bos – a campsite near Le Bugue which has a big lake with ‘Total Wipe Out’ style inflatables. Also swimming pools and slides. Good for kids but lake & slides open at 1.00 and 2.00pm respectively. About €10pp + little kids are free.
Alec & Annie were great hosts and nothing was too much trouble. Many thanks for looking after us!
Mildwaters family, Isle of Man, July 2019

We’ve had a great two weeks. Beautiful area to explore, enjoyed the local caves and Perigueux, a lovely city. Alec & Annie were great hosts. The pool area is amazing and spent most of our time up there relaxing.
The Gibson – Lamb family, August 2019

Our return to La Perode didn’t disappoint! Some highlights were:
Canoeing down the river from St Leon sur Vezere; Quercyland for water slides and fun; Gourmande evening every Wednesday (arrive about 6.30pm to get a table & bring your own cutlery and glasses); Look out for local brocantes for some interesting finds...
Alec and Annie, we have had a wonderful stay, again, and hope to return in the future.
The Herts & Robertsons family holiday, Crowthorne, UK August 2019

Thank you for making us feel so welcome during our stay at La Perode. We’ve loved the pool, especially on the hot, hot days, and enjoyed pottering about around the lanes picking plums and blackberries. Thank you for being so kind with Florence and Hannah, humouring their endless chatter and 20 questions! Both you and this holiday will stay in their memories. Days out we’ve particularly enjoyed: Rouffignac caves, Maison Forte de Reignac, Chateau de Commarque and a beautiful canoe trip from Thonac to St Leon sur Vezere. We’ve also enjoyed our morning excursions to collect still-warm bread and croissants from the (local) campsite. Good luck with the Grand Wall of La Perode!
If the weather had been cooler we would have done more walks in the Balades et Randonnées folder. We did walks from Fanlac & Plazac and both villages have pleasant, friendly restaurants to recover. In Rouffignac the Sunday market and the ‘Gourmande Nocturne’ were good fun. The boucherie and epicerie supply good meat and groceries – the butcher is very jolly in his red apron and beret! We couldn’t have asked for more from Annie, Alec and La Perode – a wonderful setting for a family holiday. Thank you.

On behalf of the Hughes family (8 adults and two babies) we would like to give our sincere thanks to Alec & Annie for sharing their home with us, in the most idyllic setting here in La Perode. Their hospitality is marvellous, on hand to sort out any problems & give out advice and general information regarding the area. The pool area ‘took a bashing’ as we were blessed with the weather. We made full use of the facilities & nice to go home ready to face the UK weather, if that’s possible. We wish them luck for their home and we will pass on info’ to friends and family.
The Hughes family, Cardiff, Wales, September 2018

A lovely holiday for all the family. La Perode suited our needs perfectly. We especially enjoyed being able to base ourselves in the pool area for part of the day. I cannot think of anything that we needed that was not supplied. Many thanks to Alec and Annie.
It was epic and thanks so much – Joseph (9)
I loved the games and the swimming pool – Jacob (6)
The Chalks, Spencers and Sleighs, Norfolk, UK. August 2018

Had a lovely holiday. Alec & Annie made us very welcome. Managed to get out and about despite the temp. reaching near 40ᵅC! (most days). Here are a few favourites – Montignac, Sarlat (evening), Domme, La Roche Gageac, Bergerac, St Leon sur vezere, Chateau de Losse. Big Bird highwire for the adventurous youngsters (Sophie aged 11 and Evelyn, 9). Reserve zoologique de Calviac for the smallest guest (George, aged 3) was a big hit! Canoeing on the river Vezere was more sheltered in the heat of the day. Rouffignac Sunday market – very good – also enjoyed the gourmet evening on Wednesdays. Every day a pool day. Thank you so much Annie & Alec.
Brian & Janet, Richard, Karen, Sophie & Evelyn, Katie, Chris & George, Ilkley, UK. August 2018

Lovely location, very quiet with some walks straight from accommodation. Very comfortable well equipped villa with good sleeping facilities. Very friendly and helpful owners, who made us feel very welcome. Great swimming pool complex with lovely eating area for lunch and evenings. Lovely local village within walking distance, convenient supermarket and boulangerie.

We arrived on Bastille day and went to Les Eyzies for the fireworks. Also used Les E. as start for a couple of canoeing trips down the river. Some advice for any golfers: played 5 times during our stay and would rate the courses we played as follows –
La Lolivarie G.C is about 45 minutes due south. Long course in good condition. Book online for best deals.
Cahreau les Merles is also about 45 minutes and 15 minutes from Bergerac. Truly awful 9 hole course!
Bluegreen la Marterie is 20 minutes away. Good course but plagued by swarms of flies when we played.
Golf Publique de Perigueux is an attractive course half an hour away and in reasonable condition. Greens good, fairways rather barren.
The Gough family, Cheshire, UK. July 2018

Thank you for a wonderful week. The gite is fabulous and we really enjoyed the pool and all it’s facilities. Very convenient to order daily bread at the local
campsite and had two lovely (evening) meals there also.
    The Moody's & Kennedy's, UK. June 2018

Thank you for letting us stay in your super house. We had a wonderful time. We had fun exploring the local area / various markets / neolithic caves and (some of us) braved a day kayaking. Your pool and BBQ are brilliant! You have been most gracious and courteous hosts. We will be back!
La Perode is lovely, with plenty of room to have your own space as couples if you want to, and all the facilities you need for hot days up at the pool. There’s easy access to everyday shops, and more than enough to see and do within an hour’s drive. Alec and Annie are gracious and helpful yet unobtrusive hosts, and we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend a stay. 5* rating.
Tim, Heather & family, UK. June 2018

We were a family of 8 adults and a dog. The owners (who live next door) were very welcoming and on arrival gave us a quick tour of the house and pool area. We immediately felt at home in the beautiful house and peaceful surroundings. During our stay we made plenty of use of the fantastic pool area with pool, sun loungers, and shady dining area with a huge gas BBQ, fridge and all the dining utensils you need. There is also table tennis which kept us amused at times.
Everything for the house and pool area has been thought of and all of the fixtures, fittings and equipment are high quality.
The owners are very discreet but also on hand for a friendly chat or to give help and advice.
The property is ideally located to explore the surrounding area and everything that the Dordogne has to offer.
Within walking distance there is a lovely little restaurant called l’Olive Bleue; we ate there a couple of times and the food was really good.
It was a brilliant two weeks and we thought the house and pool were great value for money and better equipped compared to similar properties we have stayed in.
Loved everything about this holiday and would definitely recommend to others.

Thank you for sharing your villa with us and the warm welcome you gave us. The lovely pool was enjoyed by all and is the best place to spend the sunny days with our children / grandchildren. It is such a lovely area with many diverse villages to explore.
A great time was had by us, our son and daughter-in-law and three grandchildren during our stay at La Perode. The Area is outstanding with so many lovely villages and towns to visit and the facilities provided at La Perode met everything we were looking for. I would have no hesitation in recommending La Perode to others.

A very warm welcome from Alec & Annie. Beautifully restored farmhouse - lovely bedrooms - 1st class facilities. Large pool - enjoyed by all - ample space for outside eating. Recommend the local market square food gathering on a Wednesday night in August!
3 families spent a fantastic week here. We really liked the barbecue/ kitchen area by the pool. Great for relaxed dining after a day exploring. Alec and Annie are generous hosts who went out of their way to ensure we all had a great time. Would thoroughly recommend spending time here.

Thank you for an amazing property and pool allowing us to unwind and relax with our families. Every day was a pool day – wonderful area by the pool allowing many hours of fun. Lovely owners, very knowledgeable of the area. We enjoyed the Sunday market, a must for food and knick-knacks – although we spent €36 on tapenade!!! The night market on Wednesday is mainly food but a wonderful idea if you want to eat out and soak up the atmosphere. It’s a lovely walk to the town to stock up on bread, pastry and pies from Blondy’s (boulangerie) and the butchers is also fab!! Many thanks.

Merci.

“Fantastic, adventure, beautiful, fun, friendly & fabulous!” Just a few words our children used to describe our two week holiday! We are two families with six children aged 12, 10, 9 & 7 years old. The pool featured a lot during their holiday and the adults were able to do lots of relaxing at the poolside. La Perode has been a wonderful place to relax and explore the locality of Rouffignac and beyond. We had a few days out, including a trip to the ‘grottes’ (caves). We actually had two visits as it seems to be very popular so we had to book tickets in advance. The snail farm was also a highlight where all the children enjoyed eating them! And finding out about how they are farmed. The gourmand market was great but ensure that you get there early (6.30 or before) to ensure you get a table. On the only overcast day we decided to take a canoe trip – it was beautiful, a little hard work, but definitely a good way to see the scenery. Alec & Annie have been wonderful hosts and it has been a pleasure to stay at their beautiful house. We hope to return in the future…. Thanks from us all.
We have just returned from an amazing 2 week stay at La Perode. We were 2 families, 4 adults and 6 children, sharing the house. The accommodation was perfect and provided all the things we needed for our stay. The beautiful weather meant we spent most of our time relaxing by the beautiful pool.
Alec and Annie were fantastic hosts, always happy to help with any problems or questions about the local area. We would definitely recommend a stay at La Perode and hope we can return in the future.

A fabulous place to stay – couldn’t have asked for more. Everything we needed and much, much more. Alec & Annie have been superb hosts, welcoming and helpful. Pity we were only here for a week as so much to explore. Suggest kayaking - a great activity for all the family. Thanks so much for a great stay. Au revoir.
What a wonderful retreat in quiet country surroundings. Well appointed and comfortable, and the pool was amazing. Plenty of room for all nine of us to do as we wanted with Rouffignac village within walking distance for everyday essentials, great boulangerie. Property owners were extremely helpful and on hand if needed.
