    Description

    This attractive property is cleverly designed on three levels. The ground floor includes a comfortable sitting room with stone fireplace and wood-burning stove, dining area and well-equipped kitchen with electric cooker, fridge/freezer, dishwasher and microwave oven. The television receives British TV and radio programmes via satellite. Wi-Fi is available throughout.

    The lower level has been converted from the original cellar and includes a large double bedroom - cosy in winter and delightfully cool in summer - and a spacious bathroom. Glazed doors lead from the bedroom onto a sheltered patio - ideal for for a late night drink or a morning cup of tea.

    On this lower level, there is also a small utility area with automatic washing machine.

    Upstairs on the top floor are two further bedrooms, one double and one twin, together with a shower room with washbasin and WC.

    Double doors from the dining area lead onto a south-facing terrace, which is shaded by a vine-covered pergola and has panoramic views of the surrounding farmland and forest. Red squirrels, deer and buzzards are regularly seen from here.

    The landscaped grounds include a 14m x 9m swimming pool in a figure of eight shape which has been set into the hillside to take advantage of the beautiful views.

    The north side of the house looks onto a grassed courtyard with a beautiful old lime tree (un tilleul) providing a shady retreat.

    To add fun to your holiday there is also a fine all-weather tennis court and an area to play boules.

    Location description

    The old village of Vanxains, with its boulangerie, bar, shop and post office nestles in the valley below and is only a short drive away - you can also cycle or walk to it.

    Riberac, a bustling town is 5 miles away. It has all kinds of shops, hypermarkets, great restaurants and other facilities such as a cinema and canoes for hire. The famous Friday market at Riberac is a must for visitors and is as much a social occasion as a shopping opportunity.

    Aubeterre, a very old and beautiful village is only 15 minutes drive away - both here and at the nearby bastide town of St Aulaye there is a river beach. The nearest golf course is also located near here.

    Only 8 miles away, Le Grand Etang at Jamaye has a superb lakeside beach with sailing and canoeing, forest walks and picnic areas.

    There are many other interesting and historic places to explore. Brantome, Bourdeilles, Bergerac, Perigueux and St Emilion are all less than an hour's drive and are brilliant for sightseeing (and wine tasting!).

    Slightly further afield, the 17th century Chateau de Hautefort, the magnificent city of Bordeaux, the stylish resort of Royan, the vast dunes of the Atlantic coast and the historic port of La Rochelle are all easily accessible.

    Other activities

    The area is ideal for cycling with miles of quiet and safe rural lanes winding through the undulating countryside.

    Local events

    One of the best markets in the whole region takes place in Riberac every Friday.

    Tourist attractions

    The area is famous for the many beautiful Romanesque churches and Aubeterre is renowned for its subterranean monolithic church.

    Directions

    By air (with Ryanair or Flybe) to Bergerac is easiest, as the airport is less than an hour away. Bordeaux airport (with flights by Easyjet, Ryanair and BA) is an hour and a half away and Limoges (Ryanair and Flybe) is about 2 hours away.
    Rental cars are available from a large number of rental companies at all airports.

    By ferry, there are a number of ferry companies to choose from and several crossing options, with the ports of St Malo and Caen being the closest to the cottage (at around 6 hours drive). Le Havre is about 7 hours, while Calais and the Channel Tunnel is 8 hours drive.

    A Fabulous Holiday : 5/5

    We had a wonderful, relaxing stay in Vanxains. The house is really well equipped for a family of four and had everything we needed. The swimming pool was well looked after and we really enjoyed the tennis court, but the best thing was the beautiful views from the terrace and the peace and tranquility. This is the best holiday rental we have ever stayed in and we would love to return for another holiday.
