    Location description

    In the valley, the walking is gentle. Once you get out of the valley there are more challenging walks, hikes, and mountain biking trails in the surrounding foothills, or for extreme activities you can visit the Pyrenees Mountains, that are located about an hour drive from Paziols.

    The great medieval castles are a spectacular feature of the region. The Albigensian crusade against the Cathar heresy occurred in this region in the 13th century - a brutal and dramatic history which comes vividly to life among the castle ruins. The extraordinary walled city of Carcassonne, one of the most dramatic medieval sites of Europe, is only an hours drive away.

    For the bird watcher and naturalist, the area has a wide variety of Mediterranean flowers, birds (flamingoes and egrets on the Etangs) and animals, including wild boar.

    Swimming
    Within walking distance of La Serre, our local river, the Verdouble provides a beautiful and safe place for swimming and sunbathing. Other local rivers and canyons also have lovely swimming areas. Tuchan has a public swimming pool.

    As well, the Mediterranean is only 45 minutes drive away and it is littered with miles of sandy beaches. And, the Etangs, inland salt water lakes, are ideal for wind-surfing and sailing.

    Rock Climbing
    Just a twenty-five minute walk from La Serre, there is a small crag with 9 routes.

    There are also cliffs around the the village of Vingrau. These extensive limestone crags offer an enormous variety of climbing - from long easy scrambles to hard modern routes.

    Tourist attractions

    Visiting Gorges de Galamus and the local Cathar castles. Visiting local wine producers and tasting their wines.
