The garden apartment cannot be seen from the road.
We find this route direct and easy to follow, and is quite scenic:
Take junction 38 off M6 Motorway signposted
(Tebay / Kirkby Stephen / Brough)
Turn left onto the B6280 signposted to Orton and Appleby you will stay on this road all the way to Appleby as there are no turns.
Go through Old Tebay and Orton, (at Orton there is a very nice chocolate shop and cafe for those in need of refreshment).
Carry on this road which then climbs and crosses a cattle grid, you are then on Orton Scar.
Look out for the old lime kiln on your right about a mile further on.
Beware sheep grazing and cattle on or near the road.
You will then cross another cattle grid.
Keep on this road, do not turn off.
The road then descends towards the small hamlet of Hoff where you will go over a small bridge.
Continue on this road, you will pass through the hamlet of Burrells.
The road continues and then descends and turns sharply left as you enter the outskirts of Appleby in Westmorland.
Continue along, you will see a fork in the road, take the right hand fork and continue up the hill.
Look out for the castle on your right, you will then turn sharp left into the main street (Boroughgate) .
The road passes the Moot House and market place on the left, follow the road right into Bridge Street.
The road then crosses the River Eden and comes to a T junction. (The chip shop is in front of you).
Turn right at this junction and follow this road (The Sands) up the hill. After approx half a mile you will pass the Royal Oak pub on the left.
This is Bongate and you are now only 300 metres from Croft Cottage which is on your right.
Continue up the hill and look out for a farm on the right and The Pines nursing home on the left.
Croft Cottage is set back from the road on your right and is the white cottage.
The entrance to the cottage is just after the farm entrance and is quite narrow, please take care.
Turn right and proceed slowly up the drive to park in front of Croft Cottage.
The garden apartment is set behind Croft Cottage and you cannot see the entrance until you walk forward towards the garden which is up the steps right in front of you alongside the garage.
