Location description
The local area is full of interesting places to visit and beaches to spend a day at.
Nearby (15km) is the abbey of Saint Giovanni in Venere (Saint John in Venus). This hosts a monastery community and has a basilica both dating back to 13th century. Worth a visit too for a picnic, lunch or just to see the views over the coast and countryside.
Roccascalegna is 36km away and this is medieval village with a castle built by the Lombards with a Norman tower. The 16th century structure was enlarged with 3 circular towers. There is a chapel of the Holy Rosary which is linked to the Church of San Pietro. The Abbey of San Pancrazio was opened in 1205. The views are spectacular and the walk around the village and abbey is a favourite walk followed by lunch.
The two larger towns of Vasto and Lanciano are both worth a visit. Both have interesting and long histories. The old town of Vasto is worth a visit and to sit out in the restaurants overlooking a fabulous view of the lido below. There are restored Roman baths and ampitheatre. According to tradition, the town was founded by Diomedes the Greek hero and the earliest archaeological relics date back to 1300 BC.
Lanciano is home to the Eucharistic Miracle and as such is a point of pilgrimage since the 8th century. City was said to have been founded in 1181 BC. The ancient Roman name is Anxanum but was changed to Lanciano which means 'of the spear' as according to tradition this is the birthplace of Longinus the Roman centurion who thrust his spear into Jesus' side during the Crucifixion,
As well as the historic interest both Lanciano and Vasto are thriving towns.
You are spoiled for choice as far as beaches are concerned. Nearest beaches are Le Morge (safe and sandy with public areas and a number of bars and restaurants. Casalbordino Lido, Fossacessia (stony beach with lots of bars and restaurants and gellateria. San Vito in Chietino which has 3 Trabocchi (wooden fishing piers) on a jetty and a nice sandy beach.
A visit to the mountains and other interesting villages such as Guardiagrele and Casoli is definitely worth a trip.
Vasto has a water park which is good fun for all the family. You can use the swimming pools for the price of a drink at the local hotels.
Between November and April the ski resorts of Passo Lanciano is only an hour away and is very cheap and accessible to beginners as well as serious skiers and snowboarders.
If you don't wish to travel too far, just go to the village and enjoy the slow pace of life in the gellateria or one of the 6 bars and coffee shops.
Local events
Various festivals take place in the surrounding villages particular in August but also throughout the year. Easter is a great time to visit to see the passion march in Lanciano and Vasto or in the villages.
Tourist attractions
Italy is brimming over with Tourist Attractions and why not include a stop over in Rome or Bologna for a view of city life and the world famous attractions.
Directions
You can reach Torino di Sangro by train or by coach to Lanciano or Vasto but by far the best way is to drive from the airport of your choice. You can reach Pescara or Ancona from London Stansted with Ryanair or into Naples with any number of carriers. Rome Ciampino is only 250km and can be driven in about 2 and a half hours and is a spectacular drive over the Appenines.
Car Hire is reasonably cheap depending on time of year. 80-200 per week for a 4 seater. Diesel is cheaper in Italy than petrol so might be worth asking for a diesel car.
There are buses and trains which will take you to the beach or to many parts of Italy.
