Location description
Pisciotta is an ancient medieval village situated on a hill which gently slopes to the sea. The origins of the name derived from Pixoctum which then became "Pixocta", "Pissocta" and finally "Pisciotta". Surrounded by centuries-old olive groves, the area enjoys a breathtaking view of the most beautiful coastline of the Cilento area. From the main square through characteristic alleys and stairways, you can walk to the highest part of the town, the "Castle" (Palazzo Marchesale) from which to enjoy the beautiful sea view and then continue along the path (for pedestrians) to the mother church (SS. Peter and Paul). Ancient doorways and charming alleys will silently accompany you to the "Pendino," one of the most ancient parts of the town from where you can begin the walk to "Marina di Pisciotta".
It is recommended to take the tourist route from the town of Pisciotta to the Marina, along a road surrounded by olive trees and the Mediterranean scrub. In just minutes you are at the port of Marina di Pisciotta. "Marina di Pisciotta" is a typical fishing village where time seems to have come to a standstill with a well-equipped port, small and characteristic bars and one of the most beautiful beaches of the Cilento area. The attribution of the “Blue Flag” certifies that the Pisciotta beaches are among the most clean and beautiful in Italy. Marina di Pisciotta and its beaches can be easily reached by car from the “Cottage in the Olive Grove” in 5 minutes or so.
Completing the town of Pisciotta are the hamlets, Caprioli (bordering Palinuro) with its extraordinary sandy coast and Rodio, a very picturesque, small village perched on the hills which legend claims was originally a settlement of the Knights of Rhodes. From the “Cottage in the Olive Grove” it is easily reachable by foot offering a panoramic and thoroughly enjoyable walk.
Palinuro (Hamlet of Centola) is about 10 minutes away from the “Cottage in the Olive Grove” in Pisciotta and is a world-famous seaside resort. Its name is linked to a character of The Aeneid, the legendary Palinurus, helmsman of Aenea’s fleet. Palinuro stretches across the small peninsula with a promontory of the same name, Cape Palinuro, renowned for the beauty of its landscape and the presence of underwater caves (the famous "Grotte di Palinuro", including the extraordinary Blue Cave).
Camerota is another famous seaside resort on the South coast of Cilento, about 20 km from the "Cottage in the Olive Grove" and is known for its port (Marina di Camerota) and its splendid beaches. Its name probably derives from the Greek “kamarňton” (curved) or from the Latin “Camurus” (arched). In both cases the names refer to the many limestone caves where it is still possible, even today, that archaeologists discover relics dating back to the Paleolithic era. The coastline extends from the "Cave of the Cyclops" (close to Palinuro) to “Porto Infreschi” (a paradise for those who love diving and rocky beaches).
Local events
On August 10, the town of Pisciotta celebrates its patron, Saint Aniello Abate. The festivities begin on June 9 and end on August 11. On September 8, the "Madonna of Portosalvo" in Marina di Pisciotta is celebrated with an impressive procession by the sea.
