Doxford Cottages is a fabulous self catering holiday cottage business set on a 2500 acre private estate within three miles of the beautiful Northumbrian Coast. All of the holiday cottages have open views, privacy, space and great comfort and style. Doxford Cottages are among the most comfortable and luxurious self catering holiday accommodation available in Northumberland or, in fact, anywhere in the UK.
Doxford has a superb location, just inland from the wonderful Northumbrian Coast near the attractive seaside villages of Craster, Embleton, Beadnell and Bamburgh, with easy access to the A1, which one can reach along tranquil country lanes two miles to the west.
The holiday cottages are set in the centre of the Doxford Estate, which has been owned by the Runciman family, a famous Northern ship-owning and political dynasty, since 1927. Four generations of Runcimans have cherished the Doxford Estate and the mature landscaping around the estate is testament to this continuing care. This attention to detail, which can be witnessed as one walks around the estate, has been brought to bear in the sensitive development of the holiday cottages at Doxford.
The cottages have been sympathetically restored to ensure they offer the perfect holiday retreat. They all have south-west facing, stone-flagged terraces opening on to lawns from which one can walk down through a wooded glade to the three-acre Doxford Lake. This is reached through a secure gateway, preventing access by youngsters. There are walks and seats around the lake and paths leading to different parts of this most beautiful estate.
Doxford Cottages have all been created afresh from 19th century buildings, so everything is new. In designing the cottages, great care has been taken to provide the very latest in holiday comfort. You can be assured that if there is something you want it will be there or we will get it for you.
We have also arranged a number of catering options for you should you decide to have a party or special evening whilst on holiday. These range from having a full dinner party brought to your cottage and served for you by staff to having your freezer stocked to reduce the self-catering element of your holiday.
Doxford House (sleeps 8)
Formerly the original farmhouse of Doxford Home Farm, this exceptionally spacious house offers the very last word in gracious living, making it a wonderful base for those requiring comfort, tranquility and style. This luxury 5-star self catering holiday cottage offers a unique opportunity for a very special holiday in Northumberland.
There are three seating areas in this house allowing for eight guests to holiday together comfortably without being on top of each other. There is a large elegant drawing room with an open fire, a sitting room and a garden room. French windows open from the drawing room and the garden room on to a terrace with lovely views through the glade to the lake. All three rooms have open views, comfortable seating and superb fixtures and fittings. As in all of the cottages at Doxford, there are masses of books and good quality pictures and prints.
The large farmhouse kitchen is superbly equipped with granite worktops and a full range of modern equipment, including an American style fridge and range cooker.
Upstairs, there is a double bedroom with a super-king-size bed and an en-suite bathroom; a twin bedroom with zip-link beds (which can optionally be made up as a super-king-size double) and an en-suite bathroom; and a third twin bedroom, also with an en-suite bathroom. There is a very spacious fourth twin bedroom and family bathroom with bath and shower.

Doxford Holiday Cottages are perfectly located in the centre of Doxford Estate, just inland from Embleton Beach on Northumberland's Heritage Coast.
They are near the market town of Alnwick and the popular seaside villages of Bamburgh, Craster, Embleton and Seahouses.
Doxford is a wonderful location for a family holiday and we have provided a large mown playing area with goals posts for children to play football , cricket etc. This is in the parkland behind the cottages so children can let off as much steam as they wish without risking disturbing other guests and yet still be safely away from public roads.
The cottages at Doxford are surrounded by 2500 acres of stunning countryside and for those childrern with a more adventurous bent there woodlands in which to make dens and hides. This is a chance for your children to experience a real Swallows and Amazons experience, away from computers and game boys.
We have laid out some stunning walks around the estate all starting and finishing at the cottages. These walks are clearly marked with coloured way marker discs and we have information sheets to accompany each walk, helping you get the most out of the countryside and its flora and fauna. The joy of having 2500 acres of private grounds can be fully realised whilst enjoying these walks.
Doxford Lake is 3.50 acres and lies 150 yards to the south west of all the cottages. It is a couple of minutes walk to superb stream-fed fishing water which is entirely private, used only by the guests in the cottages. The Lake has a natural supply of Brown Trout and is also stocked regularly with both Rainbow and Brown Trout. We have a boat and this may be reserved in half day slots; there are also masses of suitable spots on the bank to fish. Guests may fish as long as they like and there is no charge for this or for use of the boat. We ask that guests use barbless hooks and the lake operates on a catch and return basis and is strictly fly only; you are however very welcome to keep one fish for the pot whilst staying.
It is difficult to convey the beauty of this location or the privacy that one can enjoy in this wonderful location. There are arbours around the lake with seats to sit and enjoy the birdlife or just to sit and do nothing!
John Pringle is available to give introductory fly fishing lessons and we have rods available for these lessons; otherwise please bring your own equipment.
This location, while offering easy access to many of Northumberland's principal vistor attractions, also provides easy access to and from the A1.
This ease of access, whether travelling south from Edinburgh, north from Newcastle or east from Carlisle, makes Doxford Holiday Cottages an ideal choice for a self catering family or group holiday in Northumberland.
