Description
Wissett Cottage is the quintessential, traditional Dorset stone cottage. Steeped in period character such as exposed stonework, ancient timbers and a partly thatched roof, this 300 year old cottage provides a cosy and welcoming 'home away from home' that combines rustic charm with comfortable furnishings and modern day conveniences.
Lying within an 'arrow's flight' of the historic ruins of Corfe Castle, Wissett Cottage is conveniently situated close to all village amenities such as the convenience store, post office, bakery and excellent local pubs. A short, 5 minute stroll will take you to Corfe Castle station from where you can board one of the vintage steam trains operating on the famous Swanage Steam Railway. The village nestles in the heart of the magnificent Isle of Purbeck and lies close to many areas of outstanding natural beauty. With nearby coastline forming the eastern end of the renowned World Heritage Site, The Jurassic Coast, the area provides a diverse range of scenery and attractions such as pristine sandy beaches, dramatic cliffs, quaint villages and pleasant seaside resorts which will appeal to all ages and interests.
On the ground floor of Wissett Cottage you will find a bright, spacious living room equipped with woodburner, tv (freesat) and blu-ray player. With comfortable sofas seating up to 8 people, there is plenty of room to relax after the day's activities and logs for your first fire will be provided during the winter months. Meanwhile the stunning dining room, with its double height ceiling and original (ornamental) inglenook fireplace, boasts a large refectory table seating up to eight people. The kitchen is fully equipped for all of your culinary needs; appliances include electric oven, gas hob, dishwasher, microwave,fridge/freezer and washing machine. Upstairs you will find a modern bathroom (bath with pressurised shower attachment, basin, toilet), separate WC and two homely bedrooms (Bed 1 - king-sized double, tv; Bed 2 - standard double and 3ft single) from which you can glimpse views of the nearby Purbeck Hills. All bed linen is provided and you will find the beds made up, ready for you on arrival. A sofa bed in the living room provides additional accommodation by prior arrangement only. Children are very welcome at Wissett Cottage; a travel cot (please bring your own cot bedding), high chair and stroller buggy (suitable from 6 months) are available for our smaller guests.
The entrance and south-facing aspect of the cottage is framed by attractive neighbouring gardens and is approached by a shared driveway which provides parking for one vehicle. A detached garage provides additional parking as well as lockable storage for bikes, canoes or surfboards. To the rear, there is a pretty, private, walled courtyard with patio furniture for 'al fresco' dining in the summer months.
Please note:
Bookings are usually for a minimum of 7 nights and run from Saturday to Saturday. Last minute, short break bookings are occasionally available - please inquire for further details.
A strict 'No Smoking' policy operates for guests staying at the property and regrettably, due to fire hazard presented by the thatch, barbeques are not permitted.
All bed linen and towels are included as part of your rental.

Location description
The Isle of Purbeck is a part of Dorset which roughly encompasses the area east of Lulworth Cove to Shell Bay, at the mouth of Poole harbour, to the small market town of Wareham at the northern reaches of Poole harbour. The beauty of this world-renowned coast line is unsurpassed and vistors who venture a short distance inland will be enthralled by what the Isle of Purbeck has to offer them. Dominated by the majestic Purbeck Hills, its gently rolling landscape has provided shelter and sustenance for mankind over thousands of years. Today, this beautiful area is dotted with quaint villages comprising cottages built from the locally quarried Purbeck limestone, giving them their unique character and charm.
The village of Corfe Castle, named after the ruined fortress which stands proud at its gateway is the largest and most populous of these such settlements. Within its bounds, you will find three traditional English pubs, a superb bakery, a delicatessen/general store and a post office. The Swanage Steam Railway operates from the station within the village and, of course, the castle itself is a fantastic visitor attraction. Walkers and cyclists alike will rejoice in the ready accessibility from the village of numerous routes into the picturesque hills and vales.
The traditional sea-side resort of Swanage with its variety of amenities is a short 5 mile ride away. The scope for nature lovers to indulge their interest is endless, whether it be: dolphin watching from the cliffs of Durlston Country Park; watching the migrations of bird life at Poole harbour; surveying the landscape for mammals such as Sika deer or, indeed, reptilian life which is indigenous to the area's heathlands. All in all, the Isle of Purbeck offers something for everyone.
Other activities
Birwatching and nature lovers will find plenty of interest throughout the loal area, especially at Durlston Country Park and the RSPB reserve at Arne.
Fossil hunters can indulge their interest (taking care to observe local safety advice) at Kimmeridge.
