Description
The Nest Castleton, near Whitby, traditional, cozy, timeless, romantic, all the things you would want on a holiday. The Nest at Castleton North Yorkshire Moors National Park is an 18th century weavers cottage, it is based at the top of Primrose hill, John Wesley is named on the green and preached here. The Nest is the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city life, nestled in the north yorkshire moors national park it is only a few miles from the award winning beaches of Whitby, Staiths and Sandsend. The Jurrasic coast is on your doorstep, along with many interesting walks just outside your front door.
The village has a lovely tea room and is within the north yorkshire moor national park, so gets really busy, so book or get there early. It is a great place to have a light lunch or afternoon tea and homemade cake, there are two traditional pubs, the river Esk, a tiny station which has a small train service into Whitby so no need to drive, there is also a great little co op. The pubs in the village are dog friendly, www.thedownearms.co.uk and www.eskdaleinn.co.uk for a ginger beer or a pint of traditional ale, also most of the pubs in surrounding villages are also dog friendly.
The Nest is a small compact cottage with, we hope, all you could need for the great short break away from it all. A welcoming lounge with a huge duck down sofa, large enough for you both to have a good stretch together after a good brisk walk over the moors, in front of the cozy woodburning stove, central heating and kitchen area if you feel you wish to cook a romantic meal at home. Wifi is available for those who need to touch base at work, tv (which unfortunatly due to location somtimes has a mind of its own), dvd player, with a telephone for emergency calls. New for 2014 will be two bicycles (ridden at your own risk) a picnic set for picnics on the moors and a sledge for snowy weather, a must in the colder months as snow is a regular sight up on the moors and sledging is such fun no matter how old you are, (however again you do use it at your own risk)..
We welcome a well behaved dog here but request you do not let him or her on any of the furniture or upstairs.
Upstairs there is a well sized bedroom with room for a travel cot, the bed is over one hundred years old and was made by a husband for his wife as a gift at their wedding, it has a memory foam mattress which we hope you will find very comfortable, duck down duvet and feather pillows.
In the North York Moors National Park, Goathland has plenty of walks in almost every direction for you to explore. Waterfalls are in their abundance here too, the most well known being the Mallyan Spout (beware though lots and lots of steps), Water Ark and Thomas Foss. Goathland's biggest claim to fame was serving as the set for the fictional town of Aidensfield in the Heartbeat television series, set in the 1960s. You will notice many of the series' famous landmarks are still recognisable including the pub, railway station and garage. On top of this, Goathland railway station was selected as the location for Hogsmeade railway station in the phenomenal Harry Potter films, the line was even filmed for Harry's journey. Goathland has a station on the fantastic NorthMoors Railway where the steam trains begin at Pickering and run up to Grosmont; during the summer, certain trains run between Pickering and Whitby.
Goathland is only 9 miles south-west of Whitby and 14 miles north of Pickering, on the A169. Whitby and Pickering offer many tourist attractions; Only 13 miles from the beautiful coastal village of Sandsend. Please call us on our home number before making a booking to make sure the Nest is right for you. It is possible to take small children if you have a travel cot or small inflatable bed. High season we do friday to friday lets or long weekends or midweek lets, please note tv reception may be poor in bad weather, even just rain. We only do a minimum of three nights short breaks. Remember please that in the winter months the snow can be very deep, so snow chains may be required if you dont have four wheel drive.
