    Description

Near Carcassonne, in the small Languedoc village of Montlaur, two Ancient Windmills, the Pointed and the Sloping Roof Mill. Described by the Times Online as one of 31 most unusual holiday homes in Europe:

... 'Sit outside to watch the sunset as you smell the aroma of mint and lavender'. ....

    The grounds cover 10 acres.

A Woody hut is situated next to the pool and much loved by kids. A barbecue is available unless under extreme drought conditions.

The Pool is Fabulous and adored by all guests. Shared by the two Mills it is heated and salt sterilized making it comfortable for the skin. The solar powered heating brings the temperature up to about air temperature!

The Pointed Roof Mill was built in 1280 and was one of the first Windmills in the South of France.Charmingly renovated, open-plan, providing a fabulous holiday home for up to 4 people.

Saturday to Saturday booking in the High Season. Please enquire for other periods.

This little Windmill has an internal diameter of about 4 meters and is very comfortable. There are 3 floors and a pointed roof. Each floor is an open plan room. The wooden staircase built into the stone wall connects each floor to the next one. On request we can provide a kids stairgate, high chair, and cot.

Aside from the bathroom, on the first floor, there are no internal doors. Ground floor is the living area and kitchen combined. Kitchen fully fitted and includes dish washer, cooker with oven and electric spit and grill.

First floor: bathroom, WC, washbasin and shower tiled with tiny Italian tiles.

Sleeping/sitting area has a comfortable double bed. Folded this turns into a sofa, but many guests prefer to keep it open. However, if folded this floor makes a nice little sitting room.

Top floor has two single beds, the pointed roof has a very unique atmosphere.

Private gras tennis court (home made, not Wimbledon of course), football goals, basket ball!

You have your own personal terrace, as well as various other dining places in the gardens. Garden furniture is provided.

    holiday in medieval windmill

After 3 years of absence, we were back at one of the windmills of la Couscouillette, in the South of France. We stayed with our three children (Anaïs and Nicolas three years old, and Sebastian 7 years) in the “pointed roof mill”. This mill and the other, the “sloped roof mill”, are about 750 years old, and have been perfectly renovated into cosy holiday homes. They both stand on top of a hill with a fascinating view of the Alaric mountains and the valley around Montlaur, about half an hour south-east of the well-known city of Carcassonne. The mill is well equipped. In particular, we slept very well in the good quality beds, after observing with the children the starry night (no noise, no light pollution!). We also did some cooking and washed our cloths.

The children really enjoyed the direct surroundings of the mills, and our eldest son Sebastian declared that he wanted to live there because the “garden was so huge”. There’s a hut for the children to play. I also played soccer with them on the tennis court (and mini soccer terrain). There is also a beautiful swimming pool, in which even late October it was still possible to swim thanks the heating system. The children also were very fancy of the dogs William & Lolly that from time to time were running through the garden.

Our hosts, Allan & Margaret who live in the old house that stands next to the windmills, did all they can do make our stay enjoyable. We got a bottle of their delicious red wine (AMC = “Ancien Moulin de la Couscouillette” = Allan & Margaret Chesters). By the way, there are plenty of wineries around, and the quality of Corbières wine has enormously increased of recent years. The better Corbières wines are today probably as good as fine wines from the Bordeaux areas. There are plenty of interesting places to visit, including the medieval city of Carcassonne we took the children to, the abbey of Lagrasse (that we visited in a previous opportunity), gorgeous beaches at 1 hour drive, the city of Narbonne, founded by the romans, at about 50 minutes’ drive, the Fontfroides abbey, the Cathar castles, etc. The city of Barcelone, where we spent some days before going to the Corbières is at 3 hours’ drive, and the cities of Toulouse and Montpellier, which are both worth a visit, at a bit more than an hour. The region is also very well suited for hiking and excursions on horseback. There are also some good restaurants in the Carcassonne area. The village of Montlaur is cute with its medieval streets, but does not offer many possibilities for eating out. The closest restaurant is at about 10 minutes drives, and good quality dining at about 20 minutes.

To summarize, we had a great stay, and definitely hope to come back to the Couscouillette in the future. Thanks Allan and Margaret for being such wonderful hosts, and we look forward to spending some more holidays in your cosy windmills
