The village of Salles has a particularly rich natural heritage, thanks to an environment that has remained very well preserved ... a small "sanctuary", a precious place which has preserved its authentic pastoral character, offering to the true lovers of nature all the pleasures offered by a space still wild, where the man has found his place in harmony with the landscape: random paths through which to discover the many barns that adorn this landscape and further accent the charm of the place and we will take in the scenery, smells and warmth of this beautiful space.
One of the first things that you will notice when you arrive in the Gaves Valley is the four grand sites which are known worldwide: Lourdes, Gavarnie, Le Pont d’Espagne – Cauterets and the Pic du Midi. An alliance of excellence and authenticity, these places which are accessible to everyone, will take you on a journey in a fantastic and sumptuous setting.

Le Belvedere is a luxury privately owned country house in the South West of France. The private pool and terrace area offers stunning views of the Pyrenees ski fields and only a short drive from Lourdes. Le Belvedere offers you a wonderful centrally based location from which to plan your holiday as there are a multitude of activities available such as: canyoning, hiking, cycling, skiing, exploring the area’s history, a family reunion, a wedding party or as a pilgrimage to the historic location of Lourdes. For the Tour de France enthusiasts....each year in early July the Haute Pyrenees is the playground for cyclists and event supporters from all over the world. Or if you are after a more relaxing holiday there are a number of quality thermal spas in the area to while away your days and offer the relaxation that we all need in today's busy lifestyle.
The House
Le Belvedere is unique to the Valley and was originally built over 300 years ago. Since that time it has been a government building, local council house, school, and private residence. The 300 year old wooden staircase is heritage listed for its unique construction as it is entirely free standing without vertical support beams. The magnificent staircase is still in its original state and with minor restoration work, stands as strong as at the time it was built.
The house is built from stone and chestnut wood and is finished in walnut. It features built-in walnut cupboards and doors mostly in their original state that have seen over 300 years with very little restoration work needed. The floors in the master bedroom are still in their original state and are made of chestnut parquetry.
The Grounds
The pool, terrace and barbecue area is yours to enjoy! The 10m x 5m outdoor swimming pool is surrounded with decking and outdoor chairs for your comfort. The terrace area is fitted with a barbeque to enjoy those wonderful summer evenings and spectacular views of the mountains.
Spring at Le Belvedere is truly breathtaking. The garden comes alive with colour and fragrance that lasts through summer. Autumn offers up a spectacular display of golds, reds and browns, while winter transforms Le Belvedere into a beautiful snow covered hideaway.
Any time of the year is truly magical.

Location description
The mountains dominate life in the French Pyrenees. A region in many ways closer to Spain than France, over centuries its remote terrain and tenacious people have given heretics a hiding place and refugees an escape route. Today it is the last remaining wilderness in southern Europe and a habitat for rare animal species.
Whether you are visiting Lourdes, the Valley of Argeles-Gazost, Val d'Azun, Cauterets or in le Pays Toy we hope to give you a snippet of information so that when you will pass through to the sites and vistas you are prepared for the magical scenery and cultural experience to what may lay ahead. The Vallees des Gaves or Valley of Rivers offers an invitation to travel and experience nature at its most pristine where you can enjoy a great range of sport and leisure activities within the natural beauty and authenticity of the Haute Pyrenees!
This magnificent country is to be approached with respect. In summer the region offers over 1600kms of walking trails as well as camping, fishing and climbing. In winter there is both cross country and alpine skiing at the busy resorts along the border, much livelier than their Spanish counterparts.
Historically, the Pyrenees are known as the birthplace of Henry IV who put an end to the Wars of Religion in 1593 and united France, though the region has been characterised more often by independent fiefdoms. The region's oldest inhabitants, the Basque people, have maintained their own language and culture, and their resorts of Bayonne, Biarritz and St-Jean-de-Luz reflect this, looking to the sea and summer visitors for their livelihood.
Other activities
Nature dominates the Vallees of Gaves. Mountains and valleys, lakes and streams, or summer tracks, roads or trails, you can choose to take part in a multitude of activities that you can use your energy, take in the sensations or just relax and meditate. Some traditional recreation and extremes sports can be found in the Vallees du Gaves that will cater for the needs of young and old alike in all seasons.
There is something to do in the Pyrenees at all times of the year. In Andorra, Aragon Pyrenees, Catalunya Pyrenees, Basque Country, Midi Pyrenees, Navarra, Pyrenees Atlantiques and Pyrenees Orientales you will find countless opportunities for outdoor pursuits. Snowfall permitting, the downhill/cross-country ski season gets serious under way in January, while spring sees high-level ski touring.
With the spring thaw, rafting and canoeing become practicable, and then long summer walking season begins in early June (also a good time for riding, cycling, and the more extreme pursuits of canyoning, hand-gliding and parachuting. In autumn the crowds depart and the mountain trails are left to solitary walkers not afraid of the odd snow flurry.

Incredible
Le Belvedere and Salles Argeles are just amazing. Have holidayed in a few privately owned homesteads and although stunning, never felt entirely at home. Not the case with Le Belvedere. All four of us felt immediately 'at home' and very relaxed. Loved the fact that everything is so easily accessible...local sites, supermarkets, restaurants etc. There's so much to see nearby that I don't think we travelled for more than an hour the whole time we were there and still didn't get to see all we wanted to. The locats are wonderful...helpful and friendly. The house is beautifully decorated, very comfortable and great to come back to after a day of sightseeing, relaxing out on the patio with a glass of wine (some of the local wine is great value). Going back to Le Belvedere in Sept 2010. Can't wait.
