Situated a short 15 minute walk or 2 minute drive to the picturesque village of Lus la Croix Haute, with stunning mountain views and set in 2 acres of open garden and forest. Guest Comments

We have received over 35 guest reviews which we are very happy to share, just follow our website link. In the meantime, here are a couple of our latest reviews:-

"Cracking chalet in a great location. Well equipped and very comfortable. Nice and clean with everything we needed to make the stay pleasurable. No snow at Jarjatte, but good skiing on Super Devoluy which was less than an hours drive away with some breathtaking scenery. The chalet was always nice to come back to, especially with the fire and the logs which are provided. Some lovely walks around, and a wonderful restaurant in the village where we went twice because it was so good and Marie looked after both of our familes so well. Many thanks to Duncan and Sarah and Louise for making our stay so enjoyable...we have already booked again for next year!

Stuart, Jo and Family - Kent (January 2017)

"The property is a modern chalet which is well appointed with comfortable bedrooms, wood burner (with dry logs provided) and everything you need including a games room, wifi and even 2 barbecues. Location is stunning with easy access for walks or skiing. Less than 2 hours from Lyon airport. We had a lovely holiday, going for long walks, road trips in the mountains and visits to nearby towns. Excellent local restaurants. Excellent service with all our queries answered immediately"

Richard and Ann - Warwickshire (October 2016)

    Accommodation
All the rooms are well heated with electric radiators and of course the wood burning fire in the lounge. The house is fully approved by the French tourist board and has a 4 star rating.

Bed linen, towels, electricity and wood for the fire are all included. There is a telephone for emergency use only.

Very well equipped open plan kitchen (see photo) with cooker, hob, grill, microwave, coffee machine, slow cooker, electric mixer, fridge/freezer and enough plates, glasses, assorted serving bowls etc to open a restaurant..! Generally, everything that you would ever need if you want to take advantage of the local produce and cook.

The dining table on the mezzanine floor seats 8 (although we have squeezed 9 in) In the summer though, the conservatory with it's large sliding doors, is the place to eat.

The lounge area has leather settees and a fantastic log burning fire for the winter. Wi Fi French/English Freesat TV. Flat screen TV with a very effective surround sound system for both the TV and music. DVD, CD and MP3 player, telephone. There is a selection of DVD films, an extensive CD music collection and a bookcase full of holiday reads.

The main living area is on the first floor which can be accessed either externally via steps (see photo) or internally from the 3rd bedroom also via some steps. Given the mezzanine floor and steps, we would suggest that the accommodation is not really baby or toddler friendly. Although having said that, we have had several guests and young children who have managed just fine.

    Sleeps 7 (3 Bedrooms)

    Notes on bedrooms:
Bedroom 1, King size double bed.
    Bedroom 2, 2 single beds and a captain's bed sleeps 1.
Bedroom 3, King size double bed and en suite bathroom.

En suite bathroom to bedroom 3 with wc, large shower cubicle and basin.

Large main bathroom with wc, separate shower cubicle, basin and a proper full size "soaking/relaxing" bath.

    Utility Room
Washing machine, tumble dryer, ironing board, vacuum cleaner

Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service
Bed linen and towels are included. The house is very easy to keep clean, however, a cleaning service is available by arrangement.

The conservatory is great in the Spring, Summer and Autumn as the doors all slide open to allow uninterrupted views of the surrounding scenery and provide access to a cooling breeze. It gets a bit chilly in the winter, but doubles up as a really useful storage area for ski's and snowboards etc.

Underneath the lounge is a separate games room with a table tennis table, tennis and badminton rackets, boule, an archery set and a selection of games and toys.

    Things to Do - Summer/Winter
The village open air swimming pool (10 minute walk from the chalet open from mid June end August dates vary from year to year) very clean, large and heated to around 25 degrees the last time we were there...you can buy ice creams over the fence (from the campsite shop) although you have to sit on the wall or away from the pool to eat them because you can't eat food next to the pool...! It closes for lunch and on Mondays (typically French) so you only pay for a morning or afternoon session. Afternoons are our favourite, as we never seem to be up in time to make the most of the morning times...

There is a tennis court in the village which you book at the Marie in the village unless it's closed, in which case you book via the tourist office. (seems the wrong way round to us, but it is very quaint) There are four rackets and tennis balls at the chalet.

In the summer, there are two markets a week in Lus, on Wednesday and Sunday mornings. Nearly always something different to have a look at, from food to clothes to jewellery.

Accro Buech, this is in La Jarjatte which is a 5 minute drive..(also where the skiing is in winter) Basically this is an assault course on wires that are strung between the trees in the forest about 50 ft up...! You are permanently attached and the best part are the zip wires that get you back down...I chickened out the first time I tried it, while Emma, our youngest daughter just loved it with no fear whatsoever. I would add that I have been back since (mind over matter) and really enjoyed it second or was it third time around.

Down hill biking/scootering, also in La Jarjatte (July & August).....this involves specially adapted bikes and scooters with "fat" tyres....the ski lift drags you up the hill and then gravity takes over on the way down... brakes are provided.

Via Ferrata rock climbing, but for some of the time, fastened to permanently fixed steel cables (also in Lus/La Jarjatte) It's not my ideal way to spend a few hours which is why I haven't....but, Lucy and Emma have and really enjoyed it...It is organised by Yannick, who also runs the Accro Buech. You can also rent climbing equipment from Camping La Condamine which is the campsite on the road out of the village (if you were going north to Grenoble) where it meets the N75

There is horse riding in the village (July & August normally) and you can hire bikes.

There is a table tennis table at the chalet and the garden is over 2 acres with grass and forest. Plenty of space to kick a ball around and lots of exploring to be done.

There are also miles and miles of marked walks/mountain bike tracks through the forest, to the top of the Chamoussett mountain and just about anywhere else that you might want to go. Maps are available from the village tourist office (quite a few have now been translated into English)

The village has a huit a huit general store, butcher, bakery, post office, doctors and you can buy regional produce and wine at la Cave. In addition to the markets, you could get everything you needed without leaving the village. However, if you want a wider choice, head to Veynes.

There are four restaurants in the village, although we think that the best one is Les Pervenches. It is a 5 minute walk from the chalet. Most of the ingredients are grown in their garden and it is just very good, home cooked food.

We also have two BBQs at the chalet and a proper, fully equipped kitchen with just about everything that you would need to prepare, just about anything..should the mood take you

    Further afield.
Veynes is the nearest town which is about 20 minutes drive and has two good sized supermarkets. There is also a large lake in Veynes (Plan Deau) which we like. You can swim, hire pedallos, generally relax, have a picnic and the swimming area is patrolled by lifeguards in July and August. There is plenty of space and trees to provide shade if you need it. Best of all, it is completely free..

A little further away in Serres, about a 40 minute drive there is a huge reservoir. Part of it has been cordoned off to form a large swimming area.

Once again there is plenty of space for picnics etc. although not as much shade, so, best to take a sun shade/parasol. There is a restaurant and from memory the entrance fee was not overly expensive.

If retail therapy is needed then head to Gap which is about a 50 minute drive. Just drive through Veynes and keep going. Sarah, Lucy and Emma have spent many hours here wondering around the shops (most of which are independently owned). I tend to find that a coffee or two and a good book works for meThere is also a large Decathlon (sports equipment/clothes etc) which I am sure we must have bought shares in by now. Several large supermarkets and all sorts of other shops, garages, builders merchants etc etc. completes the line up. There is also an ice skating rink which is good fun and the weekly market is well worth a visit.

The local train station is also just outside Lus. You can catch a train to Grenoble or Gap or head down to the Med coast (you will need to change trains for the south coast in Veynes, I think)

There is kayaking on the river at Saillans. We have done this several times and it is good fun. You can choose from a two hour gentle meander up to a day trip. The organisers take you from the centre for the two hour (approx) route with the longer trips starting from the centre. The organisers then collect you and bring you back. They provide water tight containers, so you can take a picnic and stop off on the way, have a swim and paddle back to the centre (2 hour trip) as fast or as slow as you like. The water is not deep in the summer and it is well organised. You need to book in advance, but Louise will help with this if needed.

It takes about 80 minutes to drive to Saillans which is just on from Die (very good market and worth going). The route from Lus takes you over the Col de Grimond which has some spectacular views. A little bit further away, but a really good day out.

There are lots of other things to do from hot air ballooning to hang gliding (havent tried these yet) but hopefully the above will give you some idea of the range of activities available.

Although Lus la Croix Haute has everything that you would need, it is not commercialised, it is typically French, hence the charm of the village and the local people.

Louise, (English but lives permanently in the village and speaks fluent French) who looks after the chalet for us, is on hand to help with any questions or advice about local events, attractions etc.

    Winter Skiing/Snowboarding etc.
The chalet is less than 5 mins drive from the local ski area of La Jarjatte which has 5 drag lifts and is ideal for beginners, intermediates and families. You can hire a good selection of ski equipment, toboggans etc and arrange lessons from the ESF ski instructors. There is also a new restaurant/bar for those essential refreshments. Daily ski pass prices for the 2014/15 season were 11.50 for adults and 9.00 for children high season and 8.20 & 6.50 respectively low season (children under 16). If you want a more extensive ski area, drive for 50 minutes towards Gap and head up to La Joue du Loupe which is also linked to Super Devoluy. There is an extensive network of ski runs and lifts and we were really impressed with the variety of skiing, facilities and general atmosphere. Ski passes for a full day were 27.50 for an adult and 22.20 for a child (under 12) 20.65 & 16.50 respectively for a half day pass.
