Description
Lowertown Farm Bed & Breakfast is set in a peaceful rural hamlet within the Dart valley, three miles away from the picturesque village of Widecombe-in-the-Moor.
Luke and Hannah, the second generation to live at the farmhouse, welcome you with a log fire (perfect for those cold winter nights), comfy sofas and full English breakfasts.
Whether it’s kayaking, climbing the granite tors, riding a horse across the moors or exploring the beauty of Dartmoor. Hannah and Luke, with their keen interest in the outdoors, are able to provide you with an enjoyable stay.
Luke is an experienced kayaker and climber and can give you advice on local rivers and crags.
There are a number of good quality pubs in the area for your evening meals, one of which is just a short walk though the fields.
We were even mentioned in The Sunday Times on 15th Jan 2012 in an article regarding Steven Spielberg's film War Horse famously filmed on Dartmoor within a few miles of our farmhouse.
We have also been listed by Countryfile Magazine's "Top Ten Farmstays in the UK
Country Living magazine - One of the Keep Britain Farming selected farms.
We can cater for groups, families, couples or singles but we try to limit ourselves to a max of six guests at any time. Ensuring that you have an enjoyable, peaceful stay.
All guest rooms are upstairs and share a bathroom (bath with shower above) – please bear this in mind. As the three guest rooms share a bathroom not only does it save water, but it also means that we can keep a close eye on it - keeping it clean, hygienic and topped up with good quality eco-friendly tolietries all made in the UK.
Haytor: A large family room with a double bed and a bunk bed, views to the South, overlooking the farm and the Dart valley.
Rippon Tor: A double room with views to the South, also overlooking the farm.
Blackator: This room can either be a double, single or twin room. Views are to the East over the rolling hills and fields towards Buckland Beacon.
Please state when booking if you require a twin or a double bed.
Guest Room: Enjoy your relaxing evenings reading our local magazines and sociable morning breakfasts in the comfort of our guest room, with its beautiful granite fireplace and log burner, dining table and comfy sofas.
We offer a full English breakfast between 8am and 9.30am unless previously arranged when booking.
We use local produce when possible and our chickens in the garden will provide your tasty fresh eggs in the morning!
Children are welcome to feed our free range chickens their daily handful of their favourite treat- mixed corn.
We are proud to say we hold a ‘Dartmoor First’ Award. Here are some of the ways that we promote and look after the environment around us:
• We have set aside areas of land for conservation to benefit the native flora and fauna.
• We encourage appreciation of the Dartmoor National Park’s habitat and cultural heritage.
• We ensure our buildings are appropriate and sensitive to their surroundings.
• We have a solar security light, and promote the local hydro-electric scheme at a farm two miles away.
• We favour local produce where possible and buy in bulk to reduce our trips to suppliers. We also use our own eggs, fresh from free range chickens and ducks in our garden.
• We use a ‘quick cup’ instead of a kettle providing hot drinks for our guests.
• We encourage our guests to buy local produce and stay at ‘greener’ venues when on holiday.
• We are both active members of the community and support local events.
• We breed and support the native Dartmoor Ponies on the common with the use of our pedigree Dartmoor stallion Merribridge Groomsman. The Dartmoor ponies are also valuable as they graze certain areas of our farm for certain periods to benefit the native flora and fauna.
• Our natural spring water is heated by our Rayburn – keeping the water hot without the use of electricity.
• We try to promote our self-sufficient log burner.
• We have restored an old Orchard on our farm as part of the Defra Higher Level Stewardship Scheme (HLS). We have planted Apple, Cherry, Plum and Pear trees which we intend to turn into chutneys, jams and juices. Picture below just after trees were planted, the post and rail fencing protects the trees from Deer and other animals.
Lowertown Farm has hedgerows on our ninety acre farm which form an intrinsic part of the farmed landscape. We manage them to maintain shelter and food for the many species of farmland birds, insects and small mammals that use them as corridors to move around the farm safely.
The other product which is important to us is the wood which is harvested from the hedgerows, providing you with heat from the wood burner in the sitting room. The boiler attached to it also heats the bedroom radiators.
We have a 10 year cycle of management of our hedges. One tenth of the farm’s hedges will be laid in the traditional way each year to provide firewood. The hedge will be then allowed to grow up again.
Our hedges are quire diverse as they are old hedges and will give support to many species of plant, e.g. Blackthorn, Hawthorn, Hazel, Dogwood, Ash and Brambles. These in turn give a diversity of flowering and fruiting times and therefore support many invertebrates and small mammals such as dormice. Blue Tits, Great Wren, Blackbird, Robin, Chaffinch all have more room in a taller hedge so providing a larger number of breeding territories.
Older hedgerows also contain deadwood and leaf litter in the base which is a valuable habitat for invertebrates which in turn attract predators such as bats, shrews and birds.
