    Description

    The Old Stable offers two beautiful and individual apartments for 2 - 3 guests, one ground floor, The Shippon, and one first floor apartment, The Hayloft and Zingaro Wagon, which sits at the end of the Old Stable garden in its own quiet private garden space.

    Start days are Monday and Friday, with a minimum of a 3 night stay. We offer 3, 4, 5, or 6 night short breaks and weekly breaks. All our properties are offered on a self catered basis.

    The Hayloft is the first floor apartment within The Old Stable. The apartment is accessed via outside metal stairs, so is not suitable for anyone who has difficulty with steps and is not suitable for very small children.

    The apartment is light and airy and open plan, with a high beamed ceiling and a separate small kitchen and separate shower room at one end. The kitchen has lovely views over the countryside towards the village of Dolton and is well equipped, offering a four ring electric hob, electric oven, fridge and washing machine/dryer. Hand soap and sanitiser and toilet rolls are provided for your arrival.

    On entering the apartment, the sleeping area is on your left. We can provide twin beds or a six foot double, depending on your needs. A hairdryer is provided. A sitting area with sofa, a comfortable ban bag, TV with Freeview, DVD and a radio. A dining table, which will seat four, completes the main living area.

    Outside the front door is a first floor, tiled patio area, with garden furniture for the summer months.

    There is internal access to both apartments, so they can be let together. Both apartments can lock access to the other apartment. There is a cupboard at the top of the stairs where you can access ironing and cleaning facilities should you need them.

    From the 25th July 2020 we have opened the hot tub in the spa for limited use by guests. The spa also has a sauna and shower, but these will not be in use while government Covid-19 restrictions are in place.
    The spa facilities are normally shared between the 3 small properties we have on site. As this can no longer happen safely we are going to offer limited use during your stay and each property will be given the minimum of one day exclusive use, though, on occasion it may be more than one day.

    The apartment is centrally heated during the chillier months.
    Bed linen and towels are included.
    Plenty of off road parking adjacent to the Old Stable.
    Free WiFi.
    No pets please.
    No smoking.
    Dustbin and recycling boxes can be found by the garden gate into the owners' back garden.

    Location description

    Dowland is a small hamlet set in beautiful, unspoilt Devon countryside, looking south towards the northern end of Dartmoor; a perfect venue for a relaxing break or for exploring nearby villages, Dartmoor, Exmoor, RHS Rosemoor and the coastlines of Devon and Cornwall. The Old Stable is situated on the Tarka Trail, a 180 mile long trail that follows in the footsteps of the character Tarka the Otter from Henry Williamsons famous novel. The Trail splits into 2 loops and we are situated on the South Loop. Also nearby are three Devon Wildlife Reserves, Halsdon, Meeth Quarry, and Ash Moor, which offer some spectacular woodland, river and meadow walks. The area is a walkers paradise. Halsdon Wood offers a walk which takes you to sites which inspired some of James Ravilious' best-known photographs. James Ravilious took more than seventy thousand images before his death in 1999 and these can be seen at the Beaford Arts archive, a short drive away at Beaford. The Royal Photographic Society called his work a unique body of work, unparalleled at least in this country for its scale and quality.

    Although the setting is rural and quiet we can offer some wonderful places to eat and visit. Dolton, a mile away to the north, has a small supermarket and post office, butchers and two good pubs, The Rams Head and The Royal Oak. A mile to the south you can find The Duke of York in Iddesleigh, home to Michael Morpurgo's War Horse Valley, another great pub serving good food.

    Mid Devon is a quiet, peaceful and very unspoilt part of the country, where you can wander along the narrow Devon lanes and glimpse rural views through gateways. An area not yet commercialised or teeming with visitors and traffic, a reminder of ages past and a slower, less stressful, way of life.

    RHS Rosemoor Torrington, Castle Drogo Chagford, Lydford Gorge, Arlington Court, Devon Wildlife Reserve Halsdon Woods, Dartmoor, Exmoor, Michael Morpurgo's War Horse Valley.

    Directions

    From M5, Exeter - take A30 and follow signs to Okehampton.

    At Whiddon Down, about 19 miles from Exeter, exit the dual carriageway into the village, past the motorway services. Take the next right, A3124, to North Tawton. At the T junction at the entrance to North Tawton, turn left onto the A3072.

    After about a mile turn right, staying on the A3072, signposted Sampford Courtenay, Exbourne, Hatherleigh. Continue on the road past the village of Sampford Courtenay and onto the village of Exbourne. At Exbourne, turn right at Exbourne Cross Garage and into the village. Keep on through the village, past the church and follow the road round to the left and out of the village. Follow the signs to Monkokehampton.

    Drive through Monkokehampton village and follow signs to Iddesleigh. At the village of Iddesleigh, follow the road round to the left, with the Duke of York pub and the church on the hill to your right and leave the village towards Dolton and Dowland.

    The road narrows even more now! Keep on the road and do not take any lanes to your left or right. Downhill and back uphill and you will arrive in Dowland. Opposite the church (on your left) take the road on your right to Winkleigh. The Old Vicarage (and The Old Stable) is on your left as you leave the hamlet, after about 400 yards.

    From A30 (from west) - Exit the A30 at Sourton and follow the A386 to Hatherleigh (about 10 miles). At the roundabout at Hatherleigh take the 3rd exit into the town. Follow the road round to the left and take the first right (South Street) up the hill past the primary school. Follow this road straight up the hill (ignoring any lanes off to the right or left) and out of the town and up onto Hatherleigh Moor. Here you will have the most fabulous view of the whole of the north part of Dartmoor.

    As you come down off the moor, turn left and follow the road signposted Iddesleigh. As you come into the village of Iddesleigh turn left towards Dowland and Dolton. The road narrows even more now! Keep on the road and do not take any lanes to your left or right. Downhill and back uphill and you will arrive in Dowland.
