Location description
Sirmione is located on the tip of the Benaco peninsula, in the southernmost end of Lake Garda. The town is famous for Catulluss Grottos (ruins from a Roman villa). The grottos are located right on the tip of the peninsula.
The whole area appears to be a grand park around the archaeological area by the grottos, with avenues and paths stretching among fertile olive trees, cypresses, laurel bushes and magnolias. The historic centre is delightful with narrow streets, aristocratic houses and small piazzas, but be prepared to meet other tourists.
There are restaurants and shops, discotheque, mini golf and bike hire in town. It is also possible to sail, wind surf and go horse riding. Organized boat trips take place around the peninsula and from here you can enjoy the grottos, the castle and also stop by the hot springs out in the lake.
The sulphurous hot springs mean that there are several health and spa centres in the area.
The name Sirmione describes the whole area, but in reality there are three town areas: the town centre, Lugana and Colombare.

Directions
Those heading to Sirmione from the south and east will do best to get onto the A4/E70 motorway which stretches between Milan and Venice. The Sirmione exit is situated to the east of the turn-offs for Verona - the route then follows main country roads for the few kilometres to the town.
Drivers coming from the north have the option of taking the scenic route to the north of Lake Garda and then the long tour down the lakeshore on the east or west (definitely not recommended in anything approaching busy periods or for those without time on their hands).
Alternatively, they can stay on the motorway as long as possible - taking the A22/E45 from the Austrian border down to the junction with the A4 and then following the directions above.
Most drivers will exit the A22 motorway, however, at Affi (also the exit for Garda and Bardolino) and then use the Peschiera Superstrada express road to the outskirts of Peschiera and then using the southern lakeshore route to approach Sirmione.
Those arriving from the west have an equally simple route on the A4/E70 motorway and take the same exit as those arriving from the east.

Venice 157km - past Padua, Vicenza and Verona to the motorway exit
Verona 43km - south to the motorway and then west to the exit
