Description
Our 2 bedroom apartment is on the 5th floor (with lift access) so has lovely views across the valley. It is an end of block apartment with windows on three sides so in consequence is very light. It has a south facing balcony off the living room which overlooks the Guisane river. It is next to the main gondola access lift to the Serre Chevalier ski area so the logistics of getting onto the snow are very easy. Ski hire, lift passes and ski school are all in the same building as the apartment. Shops, supermarkets, restaurants and bars are within a few minutes walk. If you arrive by train a car will not be needed. The medieval 'Old Town' of Briancon is a gem. It has UNESCO World Heritage status and is well worth visiting in both summer and winter.
The ski area of Serre Chevalier is a hidden gem not well known to English skiers but gets excellent reviews for its variety of runs, fast lift system, good value (rated the best overall value ski resort in France) and has 250km of well linked skiing. It is is the Haute Alpes with a great record for snow fall and blue skies (normally 300 a year) and the skiing is up to a height of 2830m. The lift staff are notably friendly and the mountain restaurants are not ridiculously expensive. The ski pass also allows skiing in nearby Italy (20 minutes drive) in the Milkly Way - 400km of linked resorts from Mont Genevre to Sauze D'Oulx.
In the summer it is a great base for climbing, hiking, kayaking, white water rafting, road and mountain biking. The main lifts are open in the summer to facilitate access to the peaks.
Briancon is the highest town in Europe (there are many higher villages) and has all the extra facilities expected in a small town that remote alpine villages often lack. In many ski resorts local shops are closed outside of the ski season. This is not the case in Briancon as it has a considerable summer tourist trade and is a regional administrative centre.
We love the area and are confident that whatever the time of year you will have an enjoyable and interesting holiday.
We have owned the flat since 2008 and have steadily improved the equipment offered. It has recently been decorated so is a pleasant environment for your holiday. Michel and Denise look after our flat and one of them will meet you on arrival to hand over keys and show you the flat. Michel is from Briancon but speaks fluent English (having lived in South Africa and the USA). Denise is English (from Yorkshire) but has lived in the Serre Chevalier valley for nearly 30 years.
There are no extra charges or hidden costs on top of the rental (except for a fully refundable 100 Euro deposit paid to Michel or Denise on arrival).
There is a Video link above which has a short film of the apartment. Please watch this as it is the best way to ascertain if our apartment is suitable for your requirements.

Location description
Our apartment overlooks the Guisane river and is next to the main access lift from Briancon into the Serre Chevalier ski area. Ski equipment hire, ski pass purchase and ski school booking is all available in the same building as our apartment.
Shops, supermarkets, restaurants and bars are all within a few minutes walk of the flat.
The medieval 'Old Town' is about 10 minutes walk, up a quite steep hill, but is well worth the effort of getting there (it has UNESCO World Heritage status).
Other activities
Winter - Briancon has a First Division Ice Hockey team that plays in the nearby sports stadium. Cross country skiing, ice skating and ice karting are also available.
Summer - road and mountain biking are popular with bikes able to be taken up the mountain via the main access lifts. The ski hire shops rent out bikes and equipment in the summer. Also climbing, Via Ferrata, white water rafting, bio pools, thermal spring pools (Monetier), golf (Mont Genevre), sailing (Embrun) and well marked mountain hiking paths.
Local events
Briancon has a very active Tourist Information service that also organises regular local history, cultural and music events. They also regularly host the world climbing championships, world mountain bike races and Briancon is a very often on the Tour de France route.
Tourist attractions
The Vauban network of fortifications are a special feature of Briancon. The town markets itself as a Ville Historique et Culterel but one of it's best features is the lovely climate with a regular 300 hundred days of sunshine every year and lovely, clean fresh mountain air..
Directions
The train and bus station are together - about a 10 minute walk from the apartment. There is an overnight train from Paris (with couchettes) that currently runs every day arriving at 08.30.
If driving from Calais the motorway via the Frejus Tunnel is slightly further but mostly faster than the D1091 via Grenoble. It is certainly the best option if snow is forecast. There is a toll to pay - a return ticket is much cheaper than paying for two single crossings.
Because Serre Chevalier is in the southern Alps in the winter it is worth also considering airports such as Nice, Marseille, Nimes and Milan (as they are generally not considered to be 'ski airports' the prices are often lower).
When arriving in Briancon by car follow signs for the 'Prorel Lift'.
The address of the building is 7 Avenue Rene Froger, Briancon.
