To the northwest of Havana City there is an area known as Vedado, which is the rival of Old Havana for commercial activity and nightlife. This part of the city, was built largely in the 20th century, contains attractive homes, many apartments and offices along wide, tree-lined boulevards and avenues. It is also the location of many parks, hotels, restaurants, cafeterias, bars, clubs and cabarets. It is beside the sea and it is surrounded by the Malecon,a lovely avenue separated from the sea by a wall, it is a boardwalk where hundreds of Havana residents flock to socialize, day and night. The coastal boulevard is over 4 miles long and attracts a variety of interesting characters, old and young. It is the place to people-watch and to enjoy an ocean view.
