Les Vieilles Charrues, Carhaix, near Huelgoat, France
Third weekend July
Les Vieilles Charrues is one of the biggest annual music festivals in Europe and takes place in the nearby town of Carhaix (20 minutes by car from Huelgoat) over the third weekend in July (a three-day event). It takes place in the natural amphitheatre of Kerampuilh and welcomes over 80 bands. It has 3 large-capacity stages, 1 open space for street shows and a stage for local and traditional artists.
This festival was created in 1992 in Landeleau, a small village in central Finistere. Less than 500 revellers attended and the festival was more like a private party, However, the following year, the festival welcomed more than 2000 and that was the beginning of its success story. In 1995, due to lack of space on the original site, the festival moved to Carhaix city center and in 1998, for the same reason, the festival chose a site on the outskirts of Carhaix. Now the festival welcomes more than 200,000 festival-goers every year.
