Description of holiday villa in Magalas, Languedoc-Roussillon
"The French House" is a purpose-designed villa of 180 sq mtrs (2,000 sq feet) with 3 big double/twin bedrooms, each of which has its own bathroom.
The living area (800 sq feet) features lots of comfortable seating, satellite TV, DVD player, VCR, a Bose CD-player and an iPod speaker-dock; there are board-games, books, CDs and DVDs, and wi-fi broadband is available at no charge.
The kitchen is fully equipped with cooker (fan-assisted electric oven and gas hob), microwave, dishwasher, an “American” fridge-freezer with ice and chilled water dispenser and there are the usual small appliances such as blender, toaster, coffee-maker, iron and all that you might need for a comfortable holiday. The washing machine and tumble-drier are in the adjacent garage.
There is an indoor dining table for six, and the same outside on the shaded rear terrace for al fresco eating, where the built-in barbecue is nearby. The front terrace has great views of the village and is a delightful spot for a morning coffee or an evening glass of wine. There are loungers and chairs to doze off on by the pool, and a big parasol to shade you when you do.
The great 45 sq mtr pool has “Roman” steps at the shallow end for easy access, and is a cool place to sit and have a glass of wine on those velvety Mediterranean evenings. The garden is sheltered and peaceful, and gets the sun all through the day until the evening. Then you can watch the swallows come out to play, skimming over the pool to drink, and also try to spot rarer visitors amid the wealth of other bird life which comes to visit at sunset.
By virtue of its clever design, the villa stays noticeably cool in summer, but there are also three tower-fans for additional cooling if required.
Bed linen and towels are provided, including towels for the pool and/or beach (which will save on your packing space!) and a cot and high chair are available on request at no extra charge.
The house was designed from the outset to be wheelchair-friendly. The entire floor area is completely flat and step-free, including the terraces and the pool surround, and there is non-step access from the road, via the side of the house, to the patio doors at the rear.
All bathrooms have grab-bars, and all three showers are flat-floored “wet-room” type, a shower-wheelchair is available on request.
The doors are 95 cms wide, and there is plenty of space to manoeuvre – we have had many elderly and disabled guests and without exception they have found it a uniquely comfortable and convenient place to stay.

Location description
Magalas is just a few miles from the sea and a wide choice of beaches, marinas and resorts, not to mention the famous tree-lined Canal du Midi, where you can take a boat, cycle or just stroll and picnic. Twenty minutes drive inland you can explore the wooded hills and rivers of the stunning Parc Naturel, which offers a range of adventure sports such as walking, climbing, canoeing, cycling and horse-riding. There is a famous water-park at Agde for that family day out and also a couple of well-regarded golf courses within easy reach.
This coastline is regularly described as “the world’s longest beach” and offers a choice of styles from the family-oriented (safe and child-friendly) to the natural and completely unspoilt. A range of water-sports is available at many places along the coast.
The region is full of history from the Roman city of Nimes to the castles of the rugged Cathar country and the mediaeval walled city of Carcassonne. For shopping, as well as Beziers, you have the chic university city of Montpellier on your doorstep, whilst Pezenas, only twenty minutes drive away, is undoubtedly one of the most delightful old French country towns you will ever find, with a thriving arts community and a lively main square full of cafes and restaurants.
You can even visit Spain, which is only 90 miles away down the autoroute.
Other activities
The Languedoc offers some great opportunities to relax and unwind, to relive French life as we all remember it - traditional villages, gorgeous countryside, great food (especially the fish) and excellent wines, all taken at a much slower pace than you'll find in our brash and noisy brother, Provence! Whatever you want, you will find it here, and we can help you.
Tourist attractions
Too many to call! The Roman aquaduct at Nimes, Avignon, Arles, the ruined Cathar castles, the splendid beaches, the Canal du Midi, the vineyards, the antique markets, the water-parks, it just goes on and on.

Directions
Airlines flying to the area include BA, Aer Lingus, Easyjet, Ryanair and Flybe
The train is also very easy travelling by Eurostar and TGV to Montpellier or Beziers. A car is really essential in this area, and all the airports and stations host the main car hire-outlets.
By road we are only a few miles from the Beziers junction of the A9 (connecting to the main southbound autoroutes which come via Lyon or Toulouse), and a similar distance from the new A75, a magnificent road cutting right through the centre of France and crossing the dramatic and beautiful Millau Viaduct.
