Description of holiday villa near La Rochefoucauld, Poitou-Charentes

'Le Petit Reve' is a well equipped, modern 3 bedroom, villa style bungalow in a tranquil and friendly hamlet with no through traffic.

It has a three quarter acre garden where children can play carefree. There is a small orchard with apple, cherry, damson and walnut trees and guests are most welcome to make use of any fruit available during their stay. Badminton, table tennis table, inflatable paddling pool and equipment are provided and there is a large 40sq metre patio area, shielded by a screening wall, with barbeque, overlooking woods at the rear of the property.
The area's quiet roads & lovely scenery make cycling a pleasure, so if you can, bring your bikes with you.
If you can't bring your own bikes, then you can hire them by pre-booking at www.bikehiredirect.com & they will be delivered to the property.

As this is our second home, it's possibly better equipped than most holiday accommodation. It's also suitable for holidays at any period of the year, as it has electric radiators in all rooms and a large wood burner in the lounge (with free logs provided for low season lets).

It is the ideal place to 'get away from it all' for whilst it is rural, it is not isolated, being just a short drive to shops and all amemities.
On days when you feel you don't want to drive, there are numerous lovely walks directly from the property - Explore the forests and leafy lanes with their fields of sunflowers, maize and vines. Go back in time and traverse the Roman footbridge in the pretty village of Vilhonneur nearby, while there have a drink or lunch at the local bar/restaurant, 5 courses for €11 inc wine. Or from the hamlet, cross the little bridge over the river Tardoire that runs adjacent to the hamlet and visit the ancient moulin (mill) where walnut oil is produced. Walk to the nearby village of St Sornin and sample the local wine & Pineau de Charente (a delicious local drink made from wine and cognac).

The nearest beaches are provided by two lakes, one at Angouleme and the other La Guerlie, at Lac de Lavaud. Both are approximately 30 mins by car. The beach at La Guerlie is very popular and offers safe bathing for all ages, with roped off areas for young children and a lifeguard in high season. There are picnic and play areas, crazy golf, sailing & pedalo boat hire, a terrace cafe and a restaurant, both with views over the lake.

In the nearest town, La Rochefoucauld, is a fairlytale chateau that has been in the same family for over a thousand years and a visit is not to be missed. While there, why not treat yourself to some delicious chocolates from the chocolaterie located at the foot of the chateau.

Location description

There are two beaches within 30 mins by car, at Angouleme & at La Guerlie, Lac de Lavaud. The beach at La Guerlie offers safe bathing with roped off areas for young children & a lifeguard in High Season. There are picnic tables, crazy golf, volleyball & climbing frames. You can also hire sailing dinghies & pedalos here. There is also a cafe & restaurant, with lovely views over the lake. In La Rochefoucauld our local town, the fairytale chateau is a must to visit. It has been owned by the same family for a thousand years! There is also a twice weekly market, go-carting, open air lido, restaurants, chocolateries, shops, banks, PO & supermarkets.

From the property are many delightful walks; explore the leafy lanes & forests, traverse the Roman footbridge at nearby Vilhonneur, or cross over the little bridge over the river Tardoire (which flows past the hamlet) and visit the ancient moulin, where they produce walnut oil. Visit grottos where Prehistoric man once lived or visit the local 'cave' (wine cellar) at nearby St Sornin and taste the local wine & 'Pineau de Charentes' the delicious local drink made from wine & Cognac. The interesting city of Angouleme stands high above the river Charente, walk around its ramparts, visit its 12th century cathedral, lively bars & many restaurants. A little further afield, visit Cognac with its many distilleries, the fantastic Futuroscope, the beautiful port of La Rochelle. Hire a boat and explore the Marais Poitevin area (known as France's 'Green Venice'), visit the amazing zoo at La Palmyre or the beautiful city of Bordeax. Or, just relax on Le Petit Reve's peaceful, sunny patio with a glass of wine & have a barbeque!

Every Saturday evening in high season, there is a musical soiree in the old abbey cloisters in La Rochefoucauld, entry is usually free.

Driving time from St Malo is approx 5 hours & from Calais port or EuroTunnel (you can use Tesco vouchers for EuroTunnel) is approx 8 hours using motorways.

By train:
Eurostar & TGV, London-Paris-Angouleme, travel time 6-7 hours. Pre-book a hire car at Angouleme, then 25 min to property.
