Location description
Kalathas Bay and surrounding areasKalathas is really just a small settlement, known best for its beautiful sandy beach lined with palm trees. The beach is lined with a small number of good tavernas where you can enjoy beautiful fresh seafood or local specialities. The beach is popular with tourists and locals and there are a good range of watersports on offer like windsurfing, waterskiing, canoeing and scuba diving, as well as activities like beach volleyball.
The village itself only has a few small shops but it is worth a visit to see the great monasteries and churches of the Akrotiri Peninsula, 'The Holy Mountain of Crete.'
The town of Kounoupidiana is only 5km away from the villa and you will find a good selection of larger shops there. There are banks with ATM machines, a pharmacy and larger supermarkets for grocery shopping. There is also a wide selection of restaurants here for you to choose from in the evenings.
Chania
The first thing you always hear about Chania is the amazing Venetian Harbour and the Old Port with its narrow shopping streets and waterfront restaurants. Chania is Crete's second largest city after the capital Heraklion, it is largely divided into the old town and new town sectors with tourists favouring the charm of the old town which is truly beautiful and is primarily clustered close to the harbour. You'll find old buildings, museums, churches and crafts shops with lovely gifts and souvenirs.
There are numerous restaurants surrounding the harbour which cater for all tastes. The atmosphere around the harbour has a touch of Florence and Venice (a few years ago when those cities still had some room to walk), combined with the culture and character of Cretan people and traditions. There is nothing better than spending the evening enjoying good food and wine whilst watching the world pass by you around this stunning harbour. There is also a good selection of bars and clubs which stay open until the early hours if you want to dance the night away!
The countryside surrounding Chania also has much to offer. Mountain villages perched high above sea level and deep gorges offering numerous opportunities for walking or mountain biking. If you want to do nothing more than lay on a sunbed and read a good book then you will find no shortage of beautiful sandy beaches to do so on.
Crete is the largest of the Greek islands, it has bags of character and lots to explore. It's got everything from gorgeous sands to pebble coves and dramatic cliffs. It's steeped in legend, soaked in sunshine, and littered with little villages, romantic retreats and perfect places to party. Crete has long, hot summers and mild winters which makes it a great year round destination.
Crete is a great destination for thrill seekers and sun worshippers alike, you'll find watersports galore on lively beaches, and peaceful bays for snoozing in the sun. There are no end of great places to eat and drink in Crete, the fresh fish is amazing and sampling the local lamb is a must. Walkers will love the wild and rugged Samaria Gorge – a sturdy hike from the hills to the sea. Shoppers will be spoilt for choice for stunning jewellery, leather bags, boots and belts, and arty studio ceramics. And if sightseeing is more your thing, you won't beat the island home of the Minotaur for Roman ruins, Minoan palaces and beautiful Byzantine churches. Crete really does have somethng for everyone!

After a short time you will need to turn left for Kounoupidiana.
Drive to the end of this road where there are traffic lights. They may be simply flashing amber, which means you can go with care. Turn right at these lights. There will soon be a second set of lights stay in the right hand side and go straight.
After you have gone round a very big curve the road is a little straight you will need to turn left the sign says for Kalathas, Stavros and Chorafakia.
Keep driving on this road for a few kilometres. You will drive down to the beach of Kalathas and up the other side.
Near the top the road curves to the right take the first right turn immediately after the sign for Chorafakia, there is also a sign for Mihalis Villes.
Take the next right almost opposite Mihalis Villes, drive as far as you can, just past the tennis court is a gateway turn into here and drive down to the bottom villa. The key will be in the door.
It will take about two hours from Heraklion airport with no stops and a steady pace. Please remember to pull over to the left if there is room in the passing lane. It will be more pleasant for you if you do this.
Directions from Chania Airport
Drive out of the airport complex following the one way round, drive straight along the airport road. There is a petrol station on your right should you need fuel, the prices are very good.

On straightening out there is a left turn for Agia Triada Monastery and Gouverneto, take this turn.
Drive straight down between the pine trees. At the bottom the road curves to your left but it is actually a junction and you will need to indicate left and give way to vehicles coming from the monasteries.
