Location description
The Yellow House is a haven of peace and tranquility in the heart of rural Italy, it is secluded, hidden in a valley and surrounded by mature trees, olive groves and beautiful views. The villa itself is elegant and comfortable and perfect for self-catering holidays for family groups. Happy days can be spent enjoying the large private pool, exploring the 10 acres of land and fishing in the stream.Local area
The villa is situated in the heart of wine-making countryside, it is the perfect place to relax and because of its unique location can be used as a base to explore Umbria, Tuscany and Lazio. The House is situated 15 minutes walk from the quiet, medieval village Civitella d’Agliano, in which there are several shops, a petrol station, a Banca di Roma and Post Office. Even nearer home is our local restaurant and a small supermarket. There are several other good restaurants in the area including at the beautiful Hotel La Tana dell’Istrice (the porcupine’s lair), where one can also taste wine from the impressive wine cellars. There is a pizzeria and several small bars. There are facilities for playing tennis, horse-riding, fishing, walking and cycling, information can be found in the Town Hall (Comune). Bagnoregio is the nearest large town and is 15 minutes by car. Orvieto is 30 minutes drive away as is Lake Bolsena
Garden and pool area
The large private swimming pool (5m x 15m) is situated on the side of a hill, above is an olive grove and below the winding valley. The pool is secluded and peaceful. Around the perimeter of the pool is a mature rosemary bush providing a beautiful perfume in the evenings and fresh herbs for cooking. The marble patio is spacious with plenty of room for the 8 sunloungers. In the garden there are 3 large garden tables and outside seating for 20 people. There is a lantern in the oak tree which provides the perfect light for intimate suppers or large parties in the evening. There is a large pizza oven which is great fun to use for cooking pizzas, joints of meat etc. The garden is informal. and the area around the house has space to park several cars. There are plenty of places to explore on the land including 3 small caves and a stream at the end of the bottom field from where it is possible to fish for trout. We have one neighbour but neither of the houses are overlooked.
Local restaurants
There are a wide variety of very good restaurants within driving distance of Civitella D'Agliano which cater for all needs including families. For specific details visit our website: Please contact us for the web site address. There are many local wines but the best known is the organic wine made by Sergio Mottura and his family who own the beautiful hotel La Tana dell'Istrice. If you are interested you may like to spend an evening with the Mottura family and their guests tasting wine, visiting the impressive wine cellars and finishing off with a delicious meal in their restaurant.
Things to see and do
For those who want to explore the area there is much to see including Lake Bolsena where you can swim, water ski, jet ski, explore the lake on pedelos and visit the beautiful island of Bisenti by boat.
For excellent local info 'Bolsena, Everything You Need to Know' by Fleur Kinson - is a must
The city of Orvieto is only 30 minutes away and a visit will keep shoppers, historians and gastronomes happy all day long. Nearer home is the fascinating 'dying city' of Civita di Bagnoregio, a tiny town perched on the top of what remains of a an earthquake 300 years ago, and offers spectacular panoramic views.
If you enjoy shopping for local produce you may want to visit the markets, these are a typical feature of the local areas, the size of the markets vary depending on the town's importance. The markets usually start at 8am and finish at 1pm. On Monday there is a market in Bagnoregio, Tuesday in Bolsena Thursday and Saturday in Orvieto and a small market on Friday in Civitella d'Agliano.
For those of you who enjoy golf 'La Querce' Golf Club is approximately 30 minutes drive away just south of Viterbo - 18 hole, par 72, 64262 meters.
And those that ski -Mount Amiata is 60km from the house in Tuscany on the way to Siena (approximately 45 minutes drive). Although not on the door step it is possible to visit the resorts for day trips. There is good skiing at Prato della Contessa, Prato della Macinaie, Marsiliana and Cantore. Slopes are suitable for beginners and advanced skiers. .
Eating at the Yellow House
This house is perfect for holidays for families, it is possible to sit up to 12 people in the kitchen if another table is added (either a tressle table form the pump house or one from the sitting room ). We usually eat outside and there is enough seating and table space for over 20 people. The pizza oven is great fun to use but you may need a bit of coaching from Kalle, there is plenty of wood in the field below under the shelter.
