Location description
Andros is the greenest island of the Cyclades. The Greek Island of Andros is a very attractive island with some traditional and very picturesque villages. The fortified capital of the island is a real jewel which combines Venetian and Cycladic architecture, narrow stone paved alleys, arcades and bright coloured, wild flowers. The sea and the whitewashed chapels each give their own flavour and colour to the scenery. The island is a perfect holiday destination.
Other activities
There are many shops, cafes and restaurants where you can enjoy local dishes and pastries. The majority of the Andros nightlife is located in the popular tourist resorts of Batsi, Gavrio and Andros Town. All three have many restaurants and tavernas, as well as bars and clubs to choose from. The nights in Batsi will be imprinted in your mind for ever. The strolls along the harbor, with the full moon shedding its silver light on your way, the smell of jasmine as you sit at the open-air cinema, the laughter from the bars, the happy faces that walk by will give you something to remember. For those looking for quieter Andros nightlife, Paleopoli is their best bet. Most Andros Island villages offer quaint tavernas and ouzeries. We suggest having a meal in Apikia and Ormos Korthiou. To get a real "taste" of Andros, you should sample the local cuisine, which is scrumptious. Popular dishes include the island's specialty "froutalia" (omelet with sausage and potatoes), spicy cheese dip, sausages, fried zucchini blossoms, potato-balls, xerotyri (a locally-produced cheese), and a glass of famous Andros wine. Top your meal off with almond sweets, preseves, or kaltsounia (pastries with sweet cheese).
Local events
On Andros Island visitors can experience the irresistible charm of the island's tradition. A number of festivals and fairs are held throughout the year. In Andros Town, August 15th is celebrated with a big fair that includes music, dancing and feasting, while during the summer months, Andros Town also hosts several cultural events.
The Vassilis and Eliza Goulandri Foundation organize every summer at the Museum of Modern Arts exhibits of international stature.
The Petros and Marika Kydonaeus Foundation organize modern art and musical fairs mostly known as "Ploes".
The yacht club of Andros founded in 1975 the international open seas sailing of Faliro-Andros-Faliro under the initial organizer, John B. Goulandris. The races are an annual event since their origin, taking place on the last weekend of August every year. The sailing races attract numerous spectators each summer. Occasionally, the antique car races take place which also attract numerous enthusiasts.
The dance festival of the Musical society is given every June. The Development Societies of the island entertain traditionally with Ballo (a local island dance) and Ouzo (the renowned Greek spirit) festivities in the summers.
Tourist attractions
Andros is a paradise for nature and outdoor sports lovers. The island is scattered with springs and streams, which attract a lot of tourists to Andros. There are several lovely foot paths that are the same as those that existed in ancient times. All you have to do is to secure a reliable map of Andros Greece and make your walking tour a reality. The paths lead through villages, across stone bridges and along lush hillsides. You can stop at the springs and sample the waters, which are believed to have healing properties for various conditions, including kidney and stomach problems. The most visited areas are Apikia, with the Sariza Spring and the Ravine of Pithara, and the village of Remata, with the scenic waterfalls and watermill. Make an excursion to Sineti, on the green sides of the mountain, northern of Hora. The picture of the stone built houses, dovecotes and watermills in the ravine with the butterflies of the "Panaxia" family, will fascinate you.
Directions
There are frequent ferry boats to Andros from Rafina Port, which is located approximately 30 km from the center of Athens. The ferry from Rafina to Andros takes approximately 2 hours, while a hydrofoil from Rafina Port takes about 1 hour.
