Description of holiday house in Side, Mediterranean Coast
The house has a traditional appearance, with white-washed walls and wooden shutters. It was originally built as a Turkish summer house and was renovated at the time of my purchase, to enclose the outside kitchen that was originally built. Side has seen a lot of development in recent years with many apartment blocks built, but it is rare to find such characterful accommodation so close to the beach.
The house features a main bedroom with two single beds with either double or single sheets, plus a single room. In the lounge there is a sofa bed for two which can be separated by curtains. The roof terrace offers spectacular views of the sunsets over the mountains and sea. Hibiscus Cottage is not only a fantastic summer holiday destination but a cosy base in the winter from which to explore many archaeological sites.
The house is partially air-conditioned, with electric heating and a wood fireplace in the winter. There is a satellite television, CD and DVD player and a collection of books to read. The kitchen has a gas oven and hob, fridge freezer, kettle, toaster, pans, cutlery and crokery. The kitchen doors open on to the ground floor patio which has outdoor table and chairs. Indoors there is also a dining set of table and chairs. The bathroom has a corner bath with jacuzzi and shower.
A car is not essential and there are shops, restaurants and activities close to the house. It is very relaxing to walk into the old town of Side along the beach, particularly during sunset which can be spectacular. Dolmus buses run every few minutes along the coast road to the old town and beyond and are very cheap and not far from the house. Day trips to the many interesting attractions can be booked locally. Airport transfers may be arranged.

Location description
The immediate area around the house is very pretty with bougainvillea and hibiscus plants. It is also peaceful, away from traffic noise, and there is no road between the house and the beach. It is a safe area for children to play, and there is a small playground on the site. There is also a shop which sells fresh bread and eggs, among many other items. Security is located in the car park, but the site is monitored and watched throughout the night - not that there is any crime in the area.
There is a local market twice a week for fresh vegetables, spices and clothes, and a larger market in Manavgat. There is also a large supermarket where you may stock up. There are many good restaurants on the beach and along the coastal road, a ten minute walk from the house. The old town of Side is packed with restaurants and shops where you may select your fish prior to cooking. Food is good value and the favourable rate of the British pound against the Turkish Lire helps make your money go further. Euros are also accepted and both currencies are listed on menus.
Other activities
There are lots of things to do in the area, although you may just wish to enjoy what the beach has to offer. The old town of Side is said to be the place where Anthony and Cleopatra fell in love. It has interesting ruins, an amphitheatre and a museum. Most spectacular is the Temple of Apollo, situated on the peninsula headland. A few miles further down the coast there are sand dunes and a National Park and forest. A backdrop to the coast are the spectacular Taurus Mountains which offer ski-ing from November-May and hiking and water-rafting.
Tourist attractions
Within an hour's drive is the ancient town of Perge where St Paul visited, amazing in its completeness. Also the Roman amphitheatre at Aspendos is not to be missed, and in the summer it hosts opera and dance performances. Antalya city itself has many interesting sites and is the location of the Church of St. Nicolas, in honour of its famous local - Santa. The nearby town of Manavgat has Waterfalls in a pine forest as well as river trips.
