Roquebrune Holiday House, Aquitaine, France

Ancient rural house, History and character amongst the vineyards

Description of holiday house in Roquebrune, Aquitaine

Set in the middle of vineyards and farmland, the original part of the house dates to the 13th century, where it's locally rumoured that Henry IV stayed on his way through to woe Eleanore of Aquitaine! The remaining parts dating from 15th-18th century means throughout it retains many original features and quirks.

The house is located next to a Roman church in a small hamlet called Roquebrune in the Bordeaux region of South-West France, characterised by fine wines and food.

The house has three bedrooms (one twin, two doubles), bathroom, utility room (washer, dryer, ironing facilities), lounge (with TV and DVD), large kitchen with 12-seater dining table, a big barn (with table tennis table, bikes and camping gear) and garden with small swimming pool and BBQ.

There are two large Girondese-style fireplaces and electric radiators throughout for the winter months. For little ones, we have two cots with bedding, a pushchair, high chair and various baby and child amenities and toys. Bedding and towels are provided.

Monsegur is a pretty Bastide town, five minute drive away with two small supermarkets, good restaurants, banks, post office, bars, boulangerie's, bike hire and a great food market on Friday mornings.

La Reole is 10 minutes drive and has larger supermarkets, an excellent restaurant, a good Saturday market and cheap horse riding facilities for children.

There are also a number of other pretty towns nearby including Duras, Saint Foy La Grande, and St.Emilion (pictured below) and Bordeaux is under an hour, with its great shops, nightlife and top restaurants. The Atlantic coast at Archachon with it's oyster fishing bays (and Dune du Pyla - Europe's largest sand dune!) is also just over an hour away.

In addition to our own swimming pool there is a small swimming lake with playground and picnic areas which is 15 minutes drive from the house. Horse riding, canoing and fishing can all be found locally.

The area also has a number of good golf courses including the excellent golf and spa resort at Chateau De Vigiers about twenty minutes away.

We recommend eating and drinking well (as its impossible not to!). Walk to our local bio-vineyard and visit some of the more prestigious vineyards in the region, and try out the top quality food at local restaurants or markets. And, if you speak even a little French then the neighbours are all very friendly and always up for a chat.
