Description of holiday house in Riudecanyes, Catalonia

Cal Masiu is right in the heart of the historical centre of Riudecanyes, at the beginning of Monday Street. The house was originally built in the 18th century, although alterations have been made to it over time. The most important renovation work was carried out between 1910 and 1920. Cal Masiu was once a typical farming family house and on the ground floor you can still see parts of a stable and a wine vat. On the first floor there were the main rooms and bedrooms, and the attic was used to store part of the harvest. There was even a small yard for keeping poultry and rabbits.

Today we offer you five bedrooms, a kitchen, a dining room, an attic–lounge, two bathrooms, a cellar, a rustic dining room, and a library. The renovated interiors have a lived-in feeling, thanks to the mixture of the old and the new.

We wanted to make Cal Masiu a comfortable place - somewhere all our visitors could feel at home, while keeping the original layout of the house as far as possible.

Location description

Riudecanyes is a small inland village on the Costa Daurada, not far from Reus and a little more than 10 kilometres from the beaches of Cambrils and Mont-roig. Its countryside location in the foothills of the Serra de l’Argentera and its proximity to the sea make Riudecanyes an ideal place to spend your holidays or just a few days of rest and relaxation.

Riudecanyes has taken care to preserve its historical centre, where most of the 600 inhabitants live. Visitors are surprised to find that the streets are named after the days of the week (although don’t waste your time looking for Thursday Street as it doesn’t exist!). Another attraction is the Renaissance church of Sant Mateu

Today, woods or olive groves cover most of the municipality. Riudecanyes is proud of its olive oil, not just because the locals think it’s good, but also because it has won many prizes for quality. The woods come right up to the edge of the village. It’s a wonderful sensation to stroll among the fragrant pine trees; and in autumn you can pick the wild mushrooms. By the way, in Riudecanyes you’ll find a wood that’s unique in Catalonia; the area around the Castle-Monastery of Escornalbou has the southernmost cork oak forest in the country. Perhaps it’s one of the legacies left by the monks who once lived here.

Escornalbou Castle will take you back in time. It also has one of the best panoramic views of the Camp of Tarragona. There are some who say that on a clear day, when the Serè wind has blown the clouds away, you can see the Balearic Islands. Why not see for yourself while you’re here? It goes without saying that the Castle is one of the emblematic sites in Riudecanyes, as is the reservoir to the northwest of the village - a perfect place for a stroll or a bike ride, and you can fish there too, if you like .
