Location description

Escape to the peaceful, natural beauty of Pateley Bridge in the heart of Nidderdale, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The grassy meadows and miles of dry stonewalls are the perfect backdrop to start your adventure in this beautiful part of the Yorkshire Dales.
A special plaque in Pateley Bridge High street marks the start and finish of the Nidderdale Way, a circular route of some 53 miles that loops around each side of the Nidd Valley, taking in some of the most spectacular landscapes in the area. Renowned for its charm and floral beauty, Pateley Bridge is the perfect start and stopping point for walkers, with plenty of accommodation and places to eat.
The winding High Street is packed with small, specialist shops that cater for virtually any requirement. There are quality craft centres, charming pubs and country tea-rooms. To experience a truly authentic taste of early dales life, visit the Nidderdale Museum, it is packed with relics and artefacts chronicling a Yorkshire way of life of years gone by.
Stump cross Caverns near Pateley Bridge were created during the Ice Age and the resulting underground rivers lay undetected until the 1800's. Now, dramatic lighting enhances the Caverns, illuminating the glacial beauty of the stalagmites and stalactites. The visitor Centre provides a useful source of information and gifts.

Between Pateley Bridge and Ripon, lie the spectacular Brimham Rocks. This surreal landscape of weird and wonderful rock formations is accessible to visitors; a short climb is rewarded by breathtaking views across the Yorkshire Dales. Drive through Upper Nidderdale past the blue expanse of Gouthwaite Reservoir, well known for its Bird Sanctuary and you come to How Stean Gorge, or 'Yorkshire's Little Switzerland'. A dramatic limestone cleft plummets as far as 80 feet in some places with bridges and pathways providing a variety of walks. From here take the moorland road to Masham.

Local events

In September, the Nidderdale Show is held in the idyllic surrounds of Bewrley Park, Pateley Bridge. This is one of the finest shows in the North of England and offers many added attractions for locals and visitors.

Tourist attractions

Stump Cross Caverns, Brimham Rocks, Lightwater Valley, Ripon, Harrogate, York, Fountains Abbey etc.
