La Follia - an old house, lovingly restored
(1/14)
Description of holiday house near Paciano, Umbria
The house - La Follia - is just outside Paciano in Umbria, near the border with Tuscany. It is in a small hamlet, set in a rural landscape on the side of a hill studded with olive groves. The property commands beautiful and extensive views on three sides, including to Lake Trasimeno about 9 kilometres away. There is little traffic on the side road that passes the hamlet. Peace and quiet prevail. But that does not mean there’s little to do – far from it!
Day trips can readily be made to Florence, Rome, Siena, Perugia, Assisi and many other historic places. Umbria, known as the “green heart of Italy”, is very scenic, full of tree-covered hills and river valleys. Umbria is famous for its beautiful, old hill-towns such as Orvieto, Spoleto, Todi and Gubbio. To the west is Tuscany - from La Follia it is under an hour’s drive to Montepulciano and Pienza but, as with Umbria, there are many more places for Italophiles to discover within easy reach of the house.
Nearer to La Follia there is plenty to enjoy too – boat-trips and water sports on Lake Trasimeno, swimming in the lake or at local lidos, walking the hills, horse riding, exploring the local towns and villages of the area, or just relaxing and drinking in the local atmosphere. Paciano itself is a quiet, picturesque, hillside village, built around its mediaeval, walled core of narrow streets. In the 1990s it was voted “the ideal village of Italy”! There are several good value restaurants and pizzerias in the locality – one (Il Casale) is just a 5 minute walk across the hillside from La Follia. It is popular in summer for its terrace dining, commanding views over the valley to Paciano and to Lake Trasimeno further off.
The 2 nearest towns are Castiglione del Lago and Chiusi, with choice of supermarkets and a wide range of other shops. Each has a weekly street market too. The old town at Castiglione sits on a promontory jutting into the lake and is the best appointed of the lakeside towns – 2 swimming areas with nearby café-bars, water sports, a historic castle and palazzo to explore, plus great panoramas from the old town across the lake to distant mountains and hills. Chiusi is quite different – much more commercial and with a railway station on the Florence-Rome mainline; nevertheless its origins are Etruscan and in the old town there is a fascinating museum full of Etruscan artefacts.
As to the house itself, it was once a farmer's dwelling and is in the traditional style of the area. It has two storeys, each made into a self-contained apartment. The upper floor was restored in the summer of 1990 and the ground floor was restored in 2007. The whole house is available to rent; alternatively, each apartment can be individually rented. The whole house sleeps 6/7; the upper floor sleeps 4/5 and the ground floor sleeps 2. The rental details on this website are for the whole house but, if you are interested in one of the apartments, please refer to www.thewingates.co.uk/lafollia.
A utility room on the ground floor is available for all residents to use – it has a washing machine, ironing board & iron, drying rack and the central heating boiler; it is also the store for the garden furniture.
Both apartments are fully furnished and well-equipped. There are 2 terraces, so plenty of room for alfresco eating and drinking. There is parking space for 2-3 cars. The property includes a small, sloping grassy field, planted with olive trees and hornbeams.
